Hello, 7:45 pm a bit late for me ( definitely not a night owl) I did make my background and ready tomorrow thinking I would do purple leaves first… I just rewatched and you do make the black leaves work- I am skeptical… but will try 🤞definitely fun so let you know when I finish- thanks for so many different choices that you try 🥰🎨

So love the look you got from acrylics, I need to use a bit more often, mostly when I watch you, today I have been working on making my first journal with WC paper and oh that board that comes on a pad of paper, I finally chose to decorate with acrylics and looking thru my past creations choose one I did from your demos( half purple, half pink with a green stem &leaves) so pleased 🥰🎨

Really beautiful 😍 You solved a question I have, I used a white acrylic marker and it picked up the dry watercolor layer. First I tried to stencil with a rose gold acrylic paint but that did not work out 😅 and then I tried the white acrylic marker. Both picked up the watercolor even after days and even when I touched it once. I had no idea that could happen, still a beginner that is experimenting 😉 The watercolor was a dark blue from Winsor and Newton the Cotman series. Does it make a difference what watercolor and acrylic paint you use? Thank you 🙏

Hello! Thank you for the comment! I will try giving some tips, but I think this will be a long reply! Watercolor as a medium will not permanently "set" like a permanent marker, acrylic paint, etc. Just like in your watercolor pans, it will always reactivate with moisture. Sometimes the blending effect is really pretty, but it may not be what you want. However, you can mitigate some of that with a little bit of planning. (1) Paper - Some papers don't absorb the paint as much as others, and this is just something to test with your supplies you have on hand. I have found that some cellulose papers reactivate and move a lot more quickly than cotton based papers, although cellulose is just fine if you're careful. Try making a few watercolor swatches with your watercolors, and then let them dry. Add some water with a wet brush, moist brush, spray, and see how long it takes to start moving and smearing. This will give you an idea of how long you can "work" it before it smears. (2) Go easy - try to keep brush strokes to a minimum when painting over watercolor. With stencils and brush strokes that repeatedly go over the same area, the chance to activate the watercolor increases. If you do limited brush strokes or make light dabs through your stencil, this will greatly reduce the activation/blending. You can be more free with a second coat of acrylic over the first if you feel it needs more coverage after it dries, since acrylic dries permanent. (3) Sealing the painting before a second layer - If you want to get really brushy, add more fluid media, or something where you don't have to be careful, try adding a clear sealer or matte medium to your page before your next layer. This will help lock the watercolor in place by adding a barrier over the top and make it more water resistant. I like using acrylic matte medium (spread gently) or a spray fixative if I want to do something where I'll have a lot of moisture, and this is really helpful in keeping the underpainting crisp. Even if you don't add anything on top, it is great to seal your painting to keep it in place for storage or framing too. Hope that helps! 💜

You're very welcome! And yes, the materials will all work together a little bit differently. But that doesn't mean you have to go buy a bunch of stuff unless you want to experiment with different things. I always say that any supplies can work as long as you know their limitations and strengths. That will just come from experimentation and trying things. If you make some swatch sheets and take a few notes, that will make a really handy reference so you know exactly what to expect when you're doing things on a real painting that you want to keep! And the Cotman paints are great, I have a field palette and several tubes. The Paynes Grey is my favorite! 💜

Hello!! The brush is a rigger brush that I got quite a while ago, I think on Amazon. The brand is Zen Art and it is a #2 rigger. I have a couple from Hobby Lobby and Michaels that I enjoy also! The rigger is nice because it can make fine lines but holds more water and paint than the shorter round brushes. I am glad you liked the video, and I hope you have a wonderful day as well! 💜

Ok mine is drying , still to remove resist and paint the finishing touches, I am so happy to play with inks in this just a bit more structure , I am using the same inks as you but my color not as strong 🤔, big problem keeping yellow, kept turning green 🫨, oh yes will keep doing many more … huge thanks for opening this door 🥰🎨
@KateMilesArt
@KateMilesArt Ай бұрын
Hey! I'm glad you gave it a try! Yes, yellow and blue will try to blend, but I just blotted some of the ink back when it started to blend to try to minimize. It helps to add a bit of a buffer around your sun in a color like red or orange between the blue and yellow! You can also go over it again after drying to cover it. This way of playing with inks is fun, but harder to control! I think that's why I like it so much. It just kind of does what it wants 😂💜
@mariacohen5179
@mariacohen5179 Ай бұрын
@ yes I was just planning out next time, put red around sun, then blue, also I want to try with WC inks… I still have not figured the difference between the acrylic vs WC inks Michael’s had inks 50% off over weekend but I was lazy and now sale gone 😝next time I will go 👍thanks SO much 🥰🎨
@KateMilesArt
@KateMilesArt Ай бұрын
Haha! Don't worry, they have sales often! As for the acrylic vs. watercolor, the watercolor ink I use doesn't dry permanent like the acrylic does, so it will reactivate with water. It stains because it is dye based instead of pigment based (like watercolor pans and tubes), but it will reactivate. I think compared to some of the acrylic inks, it is a bit more transparent too! But some of the inks are also pretty transparent depending on the color! 💜

@KateMilesArt
@KateMilesArt Ай бұрын
Haha! Pipes are good! I am still deciding on the dark mark. I dipped my pen a little too much and a big ink blob came off. I tried to spread it and just made it worse lol. However, my other half said it looked like a piece of driftwood and that I should try adding some lighter and darker colors to kind of bring it out. Gotta figure out how to make lemonade from the lemons! 💜

@KateMilesArt
@KateMilesArt Ай бұрын
We are in a house, semi rural, but a couple of the water lines are close to the outside walls under our unheated cupboards, so when it gets really cold, they can freeze. When we leave them to drip slowly, there is just enough water flow to keep that from happening overnight 🙂

Oooh! Glad you got to see it here then! From my understanding, the watercolors that you get in pans or tubes are mainly pigment based. The "liquid" or "fluid" watercolors are more dye based. The ones I have can be reactivated with water after drying, which makes them a lot different than the acrylic inks which dry permanent. But I like using them together! The watercolor ones are very transparent similar to actual watercolor 🙂 💜
