Why do we remember this from decades ago?

Everyone saying they would buy her matches...go sponsor a kid! We have sponsored kids though Compassion international since 1998. My Rwandan sponsored child grew up and found me on Facebook. She was seven years old when we started in 1998 and we continued her sponsorship until she graduated. She's an adult with a job, since she was able to get a good education, studying accounting, simply because we sent $30 a month that paid for her education and at least one decent meal a day. Now she is doing very well with a husband and two kids. She writes me often "hello mommy, how are you?". Never discount what one person can do if they each reach out to one. We could literally eliminate childhood poverty!

Poor little Angel , it is heart breaking and make me want to hold her and buy all her matches or help her to sell and give her warm clothes to wear.. she was alone until she joined with her grandma in heaven, although it is written story but it reminds me of the poverty in the real world out there that we often forgotten

I have shown this little movie to my music students since 1978 up to 2020 when I finally retired. i wanted to see the kids - K to HS sit back and think while they watched this. The kids were always super quiet and there were plenty of tears at the end. It sure make them think... and we had some great conversations afterwards, too. If any of my former students find this, drop me a line and say hi! I have had this particular one on an old video for years - as I could never find it on KZbin once they got started. I AM ETERNALLY GRATEFUL to ju hatchi for uploading this (and part 2). The best version of The Little Match Girl. This beautiful child is absolutely exquisite and adorable!!! I love how sweet and polite she is no matter how people ignore or yell at her. It hurt me deeply to see her loneliness, poverty, neglect, rejection, and abuse. She left her house without a morsel of food or even a warm drink. For anyone who ever felt completely alone and friendless, this poignant story will give you strength and remind us to be more compassionate. I hope this version will never be taken off KZbin; it's so rare that it needs to reach a worldwide audience. I'm overjoyed to stumble across this. Thank you again to ju hatchi!

Wow, when was the last time I saw this? I was in the third grade, and my teacher showed this to the class on an old film projector. And this was in 1990! My teacher showed us lots of old stuff. Another stop motion movie I remember was a story about an old Japanese/Chinese couple (not quite sure, my memory fails me) who wanted a child (something like that?) I remember something about a crane being in here. The couple finds a girl who has talent using a spinning wheel, but they are told they must not watch her work. One day they decide to watch her, and it turns out the person doing the spinning isn't a person, but a crane. I can't remember what happens after that. I've been looking for it for awhile (about as long as I've been looking for this version of "the Little Match Girl"). Does it sound familiar to anyone?

I had this on VHS as a child and like many others have said, I've searched all over for it! I wonder if I can find any of the other stories. I vaguely remember Thumbelina and Beauty and the Beast, and maybe even the Little Mermaid.

yup, this was we saw in school. I remember that it was one of my favorite stories, but now it makes me sad, obviously. funny how things change in perspective when you go from being a child to an adult.

We used to watch this film strip in grade school about once a year and a bunch of us bawled our eyes out every single time!!
