Getting that POA is the smartest thing to do. My wife and I have one set up in our trust and I know my FIL finally had his created and gave my wife and his son POA as his family has a history of early onset dementia. It is crazy how fast the color change in the leaves happened out here. The next 7-10 days are going to be stunning. It is easy to become distracted looking at all of it while driving. Enjoy every moment of them while you can!

thanks for the beautiful colors of Tennessee we were in Pigeon Forge a month ago and the colors had not changed yet. Unfortunately I have dealt with the elder abuse first hand with my own mom. Taking care of elderly family members is stressful in so many ways. It’s so upsetting when a caretaker that you trust and think has good intentions turns out to be dishonest and manipulative. Sounds like your family is working together to get power of attorney and straighten everything out. I pray it gets resolved quickly. Although you can’t be physically with them, I’m sure you are a great emotional support to them. God bless you all.

Great work Mitch, I'm doing a similar video to "A Walk in The Spring Rain", even though it is a little known film. It has some great images of Cades Cove and Gatlinburg circa 1969. The Cove has changed dramaticaĺly since the cattle were removed in 2000 and wild grasses and controlled burns were introduced. There is a fight scene at a lumber mill in the movie, and I have no idea where that location was, but it's relevant because Bruce Lee was the fight stunt coordinator! I remember there's a scene in October Sky where Homer walks into the Tennessee Theater on Gay Street and some of the letters are turned off, because he's suppose to be in Indianapolis. You may already know from research that October Sky is an anagram of Rocket Boys, the origional name of Homer's book.

Hey Mitch! Been awhile since I commented here. We have been in Knoxville since July 1st, moving from Chico, CA. We have not had any issues with folks (co-workers, neighbors, etc.) regarding where we came from. We certainly don't hide it, and we certainly do not sugar-coat why we left the Golden State. Several of my co-workers are transplants from Cali, and most of those have been here 20+ years. We have made good friends with native Tennesseans and transplants alike. The move has been everything we hoped for. I have talked with native co-workers about the possible "dilution" of the culture and they look at me like I am crazy. I don't think most see it as dilution, but rather judge you by the way you act and the kind of person you are and leave it at that. There are probably many native Tennesseans that other Tennesseans see as diluting the culture! Funny story...one of my wife's co-workers was giving her recommendations for restaurants, but she would not give her Mexican food recommendations. She eventually said she knows that Californians can be "a bit boujee" about Mexican food, so she would not make a recommendation. At any rate...the people here are just wonderful, the area is stunningly beautiful, the sports culture is second to none, and the people I work with work hard and they genuinely care about the well-being and progress of the students. I jokingly tell folks that I had to end up here eventually because the last four letters of Tennessean are actually my first name. 🤣

I get her point as far as other persons moving to Tennesee regarding the potential for pricing locals out of housing and other things, however; I think she is stereotyping. Not all folks moving there are rich, commit crimes, or want to do anything but absorb the local culture and politics. On a level, I can relate to both sides. I did my grad work in Texas and after living here for those years, I wanted to stay in the West. However, I ended up having to leave for a postdoc and initial employment. After 3 years in Boston, I was kissing the ground in the Texarkana Welcome Station when I came back. However, I am, as a native-born east Texan neighbor called me, a carpet bagger, lol. However, I've lived here for >25 years -- not counting the time I was in school. With the time I was in TN and VA, I've been in the South twice as long as I was in the mid-west of my birth. Have I naturalized? I don't have the Texas flag on anything, no cast iron Lone Stars on my house, no pick-up in driveway.... My Anglo ancestors took their wagons to NE not TX. I'm hot-dish and Jello salad at the potluck, rather than smoked brisket and potato salad. Despite several generations of relations in Friendsville, TN and Morganstown, WV., I will never have the Southern or Texan history. But other than to visit, the next time I will voluntarily go north of the latitude of the Mason Dixon line, I'm going to be ashes in a butt can, lol. However, the part of Texas where I live has been the chosen relocation area of a number of California based firms. These folks weren't cultural refugees but were following their jobs. They did not intend to assimilate. At best, they are going to remake our area in Austin's image. The politics of the area have changed radically and become quite polarized. The influx of people, with higher salaries and pockets full of cash from selling California priced homes, drove a tight housing market nuts. The house next door to me sold twice in a 5 year period. The property value more than doubled between the two sales, as people were offering crazy amounts of money to buy any home. In Texas, we have property tax rather than income tax. My home value and thus my taxes have increased the maximum allowed amount each year since Covid. I am approaching retirement and am being taxed out of the home I've lived in for 23 years. Rents have become so unaffordable, I will likely have to leave the town I've built a life in and start over at 67. I'm not alone in this. My retired best friend was taxed out of the state and moved >700 miles away.

What's slowly happening with others moving from other States to Tennesse has already to the National Parks in the United States. My family has hiked and seen many of the most beautiful National Parks in the United States before they started getting overrun with "visitors" who had no respect for the park rules, safety warnings/barriers, wildlife, sometimes destroying things that had been around for many, many, many generations (examples: defacing/destroying rock formations, taking selfies past safety barriers or with wild native park wildlife disregarding the warnings not to get too close.) Fortunately, we saw these wonderful National Parks before what I have described took place. How is this any different than a person who was born, raise and has a multigenerational family history living in Tennessee expressing concern about the changes that are happening to the culture, rural lifestyle, and area where they live? Go back to about the 9 minute 30 second mark in your video and listen to it again..."I don't want her to come across as crazy"... Just a different perspective on the subject. On a lighter note, if you have not seen some of the "Babylon Bee" KZbin videos they are hilarious especially the two about "Californian moving to Texas". Take care and God Bless.

Thanks for your input on this topic. Question. In your first paragraaph, you mention National Parks. I understand this because my family and I are National Park freaks. We love all of them. I remember going to Hanauma Bay in Hawaii and I was ready to show my wife how awesome it was going to be to feed the fish in such clear water like it was when I was a boy. We were so disappointed when it was so murky from all of the pollution and disregard from "tourists." How were you connecting this to folks moving to Tennessee? What was the literal connection? Is this a fair connection? I can see her view but is it a conscious disregard effort like the people who topple over rocks? I will check out the Babylon Bee and God Bless you for your comments!!
@geraldfoon6283
@geraldfoon6283 15 күн бұрын
Not connecting literally but using it as an example to show how someone from a different area does not have a local reference point from the past to compare the changes to. If you think about it, your reference point was back in California, and you used the example of how you saw that area you moved from change just because more people moved into that area and more shopping etc. was built as a result. Maybe a better example/comparison would be "Urban perspective vs Rural perspective" when a location is impacted. Sorry about the rant in my reply about "conscious disregard for rules etc. didn't mean to imply everyone who moves destroys stuff. Just a pet peeve of mine.

I know a lot of people are moving here. There are quite a few YT channels from people that are from CA, OR, NY and even AZ. We have a couple at church from AZ and another from OR. That being said, I'm pleased these people have been able to find a place left in this country where people have similar values. I think a lot of things have contributed to our housing prices going gaga, not just the great influx of people, but covid, inflation, dont get me started on that because we should know by now where that comes from, and cities that have been unprepared for the growth. Where I live in Morristown, we are growing, and I hate that the junk house builders come in here and build 40 houses in a spot that is best reserved for 10. Just to accommodate the influx. In a few years, all those who live there will probably be established enough to move on, and these cheap homes will become the slums of the future. I hope I'm too old to see that. All that being said, I see the frustration some people are having, and having been a victim of similar experiences in the 80s, I can sympathize. Unfortunately, that's all I can do. I enjoy your channel, Mitch, and I am glad and proud your family chose Tennessee. For a state that gets a lot of flack, because it's a part of the "South" it just goes to show that people come here and realize it's not what the media and our politicians and the libs paint it to be. Coming from CA too, we no longer mention where we are from and that we are even new to the are. We avoid it all cost. The judgement is so real and it's heavy. They think we're coming to ruin their town and heritage. But no one cares about what has happened to us in CA. Look what has happened to our home state. We are refugees who made it out. We left everything we knew, loved, careers, friends, & family. And we can't even speak of it bc it's such a "horrible" place. But it's our home state at the end of the day and I'm proud & I love CA for what it has to offer. Just because we don't agree with the politics doesn't mean it's bad place. I am right here with the people of Tennessee and everyone else who has the same morals and values. We came from an even smaller ruel town then we live in now in TN. Inflation was mainly caused by government spending as a result of the covid 19 pandemic . Tennessee and other southern states like Georgia , North Carolina, South Carolina , and Florida have been growing for decades mainly through more people moving here than moving out. Tennessee actually grew more by percentage in the 1970's and 1990's than it is now. The difference now is there maybe more people moving from states like California than previously did. That is probably as the result of their local and state governments policies where they came from which they disagreed with. Especially how those places chose to do things like lockdowns and mask mandates during the pandemic along with a high cost of living. The costs of houses , rent , food ,gas ,and everything else is up everywhere not just Tennessee and other southern states. This was caused by the government spending too much money including stimulus checks which the government caused by shutting down or restricting businesses during the pandemic. This caused the layoffs and work from home policies which contributed to inflation. Homebuilders also severely lowered the number of houses and apartments they built because they didn't think people would be able to buy or rent them. Thus a limited supply combined with inflation massively increased the price of houses and rent. Blame stupid government policies and not the people who wanted to have a better life by moving to places like Tennessee. I am native Tennessean and welcome people here that are hard working and make Tennessee a better place.

There's a Pals in Morristown, I think that's the closest one to Maryville. My Mom likes to go to Yoders Mercantile near Greeneville, they have great jams and preserved foods, and I usually score some Pal's when I take her there.

Welcome back to Clinton! Lots of history in our little town. You might want to visit the Green-McAdoo Cultural Center and learn about the Clinton12. Also check out Hoskins Drug Store’s 1040s soda fountain for a tasty milk shake. As a member of one of the families that came over the Smokies in covered wagons into Blount County, I say that part of the Tennessee culture is that everyone is welcome here regardless of where they come from. That is what makes this country great!

Oh man, my wife and I looked at each other and said, "Let's go!!" We love Clinton!! Oh wow, now we have many more reasons to go back. Yes, we do feel so welcome and try to extend that welcome because we know how folks feel about leaving where they're from. Especially CA

Neighbor Rita and I love Climton, and at one time, talked about selling our current house, and buying one there. We might yet, you never can tell what the lord has in store. As for your lead story, the town in Indiana we both grew up in, no longer resembles the quiet little town. It is more like a big tourist trap. Like you, Mitch, I wondered where the lady came up with "Nothing to lose." You lose friends, in some cases family, and it isn't cheap to move either. Mitch I am glad your here and part of our community. I think I told you this before. Great Antique Malls in the area, also Pigeon Forge Off Season. Maybe we can meet up sometime and go Antique huntimg.

I completely feel your sentiment on the hurricane. We truly were very fortunate here in the Knoxville metro, and I feel the same heartache for those truly devastated by it all just a very short drive away. So awesome your daughter got exactly what she was looking for in what sounds like a fantastic deal! We went to Clinton this year for their 4th of July celebration, and it was awesome. No where near as crowded as DT Knoxville, plenty of space to spread out and just relax. Lots of bounce houses, etc. We may have to check out the fall festival, but I can tell you Oakes Farm in Corryton is beautiful as another place for you to check out one day.

I really want to move my family to east tennessee. But right now I wish I could just get down there and help the victims and the recovery

Yep, I know your desire and I share that too. Right now they've said the best to help is to donate money or supplies to help. They said folks wanting to drive into needed areas would just hinder efforts and I totally get it. I would love to get in there and help and give some sort of hope and encouragement to these folks. Yet, they've said that the supplies they've received has done that for them.

Hey Mitch! That Wendy's in your photo was near Biltmore Village, I worked at a Mexican restaurant in Biltmore Village 25 years ago and ate there often. The Swannanoa river that flooded there is a tiny stream! I once saw some people tubing down that river and thought it was very funny because their two inner tubes stretched from bank to bank. The village was built by George Vanderbilt for the workers building his Biltmore Estate. I finally started posting on my channel this week. Thanks for your inspiration! Not to plug, but I do have a very brief video showing how high the Little River got behind the Walland post office. Blount County was very fortunate.

Thanks for sharing your heart about what’s happened in your neck of the woods, Mitch! It’s your channel and you should express whatever it is that you want and if God has put on your heart to share about your mixed emotions then by all means! It truly is unfathomable and I’ll continue to pray for God’s comfort and peace for all those affected by Helene!! 😢
