I had been playing Morin Khuur (Mongolian name) aka Matouqin (Mandarin name) for a year. My Teacher is of Inner Mongolian Origin hence I learn the Matouqin (Inner Mongolian Style) This man is playing matouqin. The design is smaller and has a different tuning mechanism. Matouqin is the Inner-Mongolian Style of Morin Khuur. Yes, Inner Mongolian culture has Chinese Influence. I recognised some of the tunes here. It was composed by Master Chi Bulag, featured in his album featured in his album "Thousands of Horse are galloping" which are is also one of his famous albums. The first song is "Jus-Rei" 《珠色莱》 and second is "Thousands of Horse are Galloping".《万马奔腾》

lol this is more of a Chinese tune than a Mongolian tune. i heard the first 15 secs and it sounded Mongolian than it started sounding more like a Chinese oriental song that's put in the background of western movies

As a mongol, I dont want to see a chinese man playing our tradational musical instrument. Let mongolian things be mongolian. Everything you touch becomes chinese nowadays that is why I dont like. No hatred towards the man playing. But concept itself must be heard!

If people didn't/couldn't share instruments regardless of where they originated from, then there wouldn't be any music to enjoy. Besides that he plays very well.

Why not? Our Chinese culture is not very rich in music. We either learn from Europeans, Africans, or from Mongolians, why cut us off from adopting your great culture? Don't you want morin-khuur be like violin or guitar, played by people all around the world?

chinese man is playing chinese sound on Mongolian morin huur. It sounds really awful. LOL. Morin huur is for traditional mongolian soft melody. Not for this kind of screwing sound As an mongol, As an mongol, i feel really sorry about our authentic equestrian culture is used for business losing it`s authentic value.

Sound racist IMO... or maybe it is your personal preferences. By your logic, piano should only be used to play Classical music... e.g Beethoven. Most known* morin khuur melodies were created during the 1940s.. it begs what “traditional Mongolian music” really mean. Does it means melodies from thousands of years ago?? My point is music instruments regardless of where it originated transient cultures and times. So what, if a traditional instrument is used to play modern music and by a Chinese American? The outcome is what truly matter, the artist by playing the Morin Khuur is helping in introducing/ promoting the instrument and Mongol cultures to the world.

He seems to sometimes put his fingertip *under* the string and press up. Amazing.

Ok Mr Daxun Zhang, I found the answer : "Double Bassist DaXun Zhang has established himself as an unparalleled artist, earning the highest praise from both critics and audiences alike. The recipient of numerous awards, Mr. Zhang holds the distinction of being the youngest artist to win the International Society of Bassists Solo Competition in 2001 as well as the first double bass player to win the Young Concert Artists International Auditions. In 2007, Mr. Zhang was awarded the Avery Fisher Career Grant, which confirms his eminence as a soloist on this unusual instrument." Congratulations !
