you could use a plastic tube sleeve around your rod.
@melissanigh7052 Жыл бұрын
A plastic sleeve caused humidity retention and serious rusting on both ends of an early '60s Gibson Heritage truss rod I'm replacing because it was made in a completely dysfunctional way.

I love your work. How did the Gibson style rod work out after a few months, did it work well to straighten the neck? I see you just flattened the anchor end, would this not mean that the rod would be inclined to twist along with the nut? To me this type of rod is a lot less intrusive as it takes up a lot less room than the 2 piece rods.

@@majorgunn what did he mean when he said there wasn't enough "load" on the truss rod, the curvature?
@majorgunn Жыл бұрын
@@joestevens8753 when you level your finger board you want a bit of load on it. If there is load on it all ready then when you put the string tension on with your strings, you now have the ability to tune in (bend the neck) in both directions.

Stability in wood is nowhere more important than in ship building. Michael, doubtlessly you know more than what you expressed in these three videos. Still, there is no better way than to understand QS than to look at ancient ship building, and the tools used there and newer tools developed over time. A flitch is a pie-shaped piece of wood, cut in a pit mill, where one man stood in the pit with the log above, and another man stood atop the log, both guiding their progress. They generally cut wood into pie shaped flitches, the dimensions of which, were determined by other men, who took the process from there with their own tools. There is zero waste when cutting a good log into quarter sawn flitches. Other men trimmed the flitches to their needs. Your video series is being viewed by hobby mill owners. Their small mills are limiting them in their efforts to learn how to QS. The linked video is the best I have seen, though I know with ingenuity, a better job than even this can be accomplished. kzbin.info/www/bejne/l6eUhWiCpayanZI&ab_channel=WoodMadeHere

@nodnostrebor4300 Жыл бұрын
@@majorgunn - Thanks. Here are two possibilities to imagine. Think of a large log with a bell at the base. That too can be QS to produce very wide QS flitches, often fIgured. Similarly, imagine a large, but swooping log. This QS can produce wide swooping QS flitches. In ship building, these swooping logs have purpose. Here's a video showing an ancient ship builder's band saw. Enjoy. kzbin.info/www/bejne/pXyolWaopJiNaqs&ab_channel=SampsonBoatCo

I'm trying to make one out of a stainless steel paint scraper. You think it'll work? It's got the meat, with a little bit of flexibility. I just can't seem to burnish it properly.
@majorgunn2 жыл бұрын
Hello Robert, the burr is essential, perhaps put it as close to the vice as you can to keep if from flexing...try different tools to burnish. If you can make a flat edge hold it firm, you should be able to . Keep trying, Are you able to get any material off without the burr... if so just keep working on the burr, it takes a few times to get the hang of it. Thank you for watching. Michael
@robertlombardo84372 жыл бұрын
@@majorgunn I was able to get a tiny, tiny bit of dust off. I think I made a little bit of a burr on the edge, so it'll likely work. I was told by a sharpening expert that the metal was improperly annealed and it would be too soft to hold an edge for very long. I did only get the scraper on the cheap at the dollar store. What do you think?
