Just first finger for the strum. I keep my right hand nails longer than my left. I capo 2 the first 5 strings to leave the low E string open, thus creating drop D tuning. I have to switch to arpeggio at “behind the blue Rockies…”, picking then back to strumming at “over the mountains…” I don’t use any picks when recording. When playing out, I use a plastic thumb pick and 3 steel 0.013 finger picks, the lightest I can find. They allow me to mold them to my fingers each time I put them on.

It took me years to discover it as a self taught musician. The nice thing is you can still use your full chords for G, C/G, D/F#. If you tune the string to drop D you have to modify the fingering for those. The only chord you cannot do is a full E or Em. I do an E/B instead. I mute the low E string when playing Es or A Or other chords that would conflict with the dropped D. When a hymn or song calls for a capo other than 2, and would work for drop D I try to do it this way with capo 2.
