As parents we need to understand these developmental milestones in babies and children. If a child’s brain hasn’t reached the milestone they cannot understand certain concepts. As a parents we think if I just explain it slowly and simply they will get it, it’s like knocking on a door when no one is home.

This exercise is unfair. It is well know that humans become aware only around the age of 75. And that too after having watched several of their grandkids.

Scientific researchers are incredible. The conclusion they come up to is « they have no sense of self »? (Is that why the second baby decided to put her self in the cart?) They just don’t see there’s a damn rope from under the carpet attached around the cart. edit: and Johnathan saw the rope. He even looked at the area several times.

This is more bodily awareness in the realm of consequences with physics, and not self-awareness. Self-awareness is awareness that you exist as an individual, including things like emotions, thoughts, values, and personality. Scientists assume because certain animals don't react when a mirror is places in front of them they have no awareness of self. Seems narrowing to our own perception and silly to project onto children and animals our sense of value as to how to test for such things, as it likely just means they don't see things the same way we do or categorize interactions like functioning human adults.

I’m sure this is a simplification but it’s funny that the implication is that because two babies got off the mat they concluded that 18mo is when babies gain self awareness

I can remember my very first conscious thought, as weird as it sounds. I was in the kitchen playing with one of my shoes, I became aware of the fact that I liked the shoe, then I became aware of the fact that I was aware of the fact that I liked the shoe. That's the first time I remember thinking a conscious thought and having a concept of liking a thing. I don't know how old I was exactly, but the shoe in question I remember distinctly as being the type that kids first get when they've started walking.

My son is 2 next month (23 months) and was pushing his little tikes car in the hallway. His car caught on a bag in the hallway and wouldn't move. He found that the gas cap was sticking out too much and getting caught. What he did next really surprised me 😂 he opened the gas cap, which made it lie flat against the car, and stopped getting caught on the bag!

This doesn't prove that younger babies do not possess self awareness, it only proves that their comprehension and problem solving skills are less developed.
