I've found compelling evidence that when Poe published "The Raven" in the newspaper he worked for, the NY "Evening Mirror," he was scooping the real author, Mathew Franklin Whittier, by three days. In other words, his claim to it was merely a scam, similar to today's identity theft.

beautiful poem, but the story is very very DISTorted. IT didn't happen this way at all. It's exciting to see Paul as this lone rider in the night, but this was a coordinated operation. A Boston doctor named Joseph Warren led the mission. He had William Daws, a second rider, take the Inland route, while Revere went up the Charles river. This way in case one of them gets captured, there's backup. They needed to meet up at Lexington to first warn Sam Adams and John Hancock. From a tactical standpoint, No brave idiot would ride into the night with just a lantern, no flashlight, no phone, radio, or any Backup from their fellow patriots, Dr. Samuel Prescott was the one who Actually completed the ride. Longfellow was Paul's distant cousin. Longfellow's grandpa, years prior had Paul Revere under his command. Paul disobeyed an direct order during one mission and pissed off Payleg Wadsworth. So One motivation behind this poem was Henry Longfellow giving the finger to his grandpa.
