Mo'Nique is amazing. She reminds me of the comediennes that headlined the burlesque shows in theaters, just before comedy was filmed for TV. After the era of burlesque, risque comedy was performed in nightclubs, strip clubs, bars, and coffee houses. Moms Mabley, LaWanda Page, Redd Foxx, Richard Pryor, Lenny Bruce, etcetera, started out doing comedy by touring nightclubs. Comedy didn't even go "mainstream" until they started making sit-coms on television in the 1940s and 50s. They couldn't curse on television, so comedy cleaned up its language for prime time television so as not to inflame the Religious Right. There was a popular misconception that people who cursed were somehow degenerate sinners. Today, we know that comedians who curse are just people performing an act. Some acts are made for comedy clubs, and some acts are tailored for TV. They're targeting different demographics, but it's all the same artform--and comedy goes back to the ancient world. This is one of the oldest professions.
