This might not be the best place to ask this but I’m not sure if Lisa’s channel being active… but could you ask her something? Mala Powers in one of the workshops spoke about people struggling with the center device because they try to create it, rather than experience it as something already existing and themselves sort of relaxing into it. I was hoping if Lisa could, if she had any personal experience of Mala or Anthony Quinn perhaps, speaking more on the technique of center. I do not understand the practical standpoint of this “impulse” business that happens, that we need to imagine beforehand. I feel it’s a very neglected part of the technique and I feel it’s either because people do not understand it enough to teach it, or they haven’t explored it enough. I feel maybe the method as frequently explored may not be the same application of the center as someone like Mala Powers would have used. I do wish she could maybe have more to say about it

You haven't talked about the archetypal action of want yet?
@jthomakos7 ай бұрын
I personally disagree with Leonard Petit's take on "Want" as an archetype. I think since all good acting is based on a relationship of want and need and want is really a manifestation of the will-force which is covered in Chekhov's Trinity of the Psychology (Thinking, Feeling, & Willing), it is just plain to vague of an idea to express archetypally in this way. When are you not wanting something in acting?
@emmamorley18367 ай бұрын
Can you give some tips about how the centers work when they’re moving? I’m not sure how Chekhov uses them, especially when the center is outside and is moving shifting and changing; sometimes jumping into the chest or flying out & he described one instant “the character is chasing her center”. Not sure how I should move from a center which is also moving
@TheInspiredActor7 ай бұрын
To be honest, this is really hard to describe only in words. The only think I can say is if you think of a center as a focal point to which all of the character's energy is directed, you might find that the idea of chasing one's center deeply informs the psychology of the character. If the center is outside one's own body then all the character's energy is focused to a point where they forget their physical self perhaps to their own detriment.

If esch line in a dialogue demands different AG's,,,,then each time do I have to ask my image about the Gesture, slow or fast & what quality of movement etc? Then for each AG'S do I have to practice the exercise of losing then PG/AG followed by Winning or viceversa
@TheInspiredActor11 ай бұрын
I don't think you "have to" do anything. If just using the gesture is enough, then go no further. If however, you are stumped or want to go into even more detail, then go right ahead. The great thing about Chekhov is that it is flexible to your needs in each given situation. Don't wear yourself out trying to work with gesture the "correct" way.

@TheInspiredActor Жыл бұрын
In reference to The Four Brother (Beauty, Ease, Entirety, and Form), we primarily are referring to "The Artistic Frame (Preparation/Visualization, Action, Sustain/Radiation, Stop)" and "composition of the performance". CoP includes the three main laws of composition: Triplicity, Polarity, and Transformation. But also includes other laws of composition such as Pause, Rhythmical Waves, and Rhythmical Repetition. These can be found in the book On the Technique of Acting, Chapter 8. Sinead Rushe's book, Michael Chekhov's Acting Technique, A Practitioner's Guide also has a pretty good chapter on Form you should also read.

Hi, I'm unfamiliar with the terms "Gravity" and "Levitation". I am guessing here, but our terminology over here might refer to what you are thinking of as Rising, Falling, and Balancing? Some also refer to it as Floating, Falling, and Balancing. Is this what you mean, maybe?

radiating means pick up the line and speak after the AG
@TheInspiredActor Жыл бұрын
No, Radiating means sending your energy out with your line. The purpose of PG is to gather a certain kind of energy which you use to send your line to the "other" in the scene with you. The kind, quality and strength of your radiation is created through the gesture.

when I want to do like 2-3 gestures within a single take.. I don’t get how we can switch from one to the next without physically moving
@TheInspiredActor Жыл бұрын
Once you have ingrained the gesture into your body physically, then you can veil and allow the gesture to live solely in your imagination. The gesture is there for you as a rehearsal tool. The audience should never see you doing a gesture (although there may be some subtle remnants left in your physicality).

The first way to start with psychological gestures is the archetypal gesture?
@TheInspiredActor Жыл бұрын
For beginners, I think starting with AG is the best way to approach PG. But as you become more adept and know what a PG should feel like, then you may skip that step and find a different approach PG.

What is difference in psycological gesture and archtypal gesture? Please explained?
@TheInspiredActor Жыл бұрын
Psychological Gesture = Archetypal Gesture + Quality. In other words, Archetypal Gestures serve as movement templates onto which you consciously add a quality (Molding, Flying, Flowing, Radiating, emotion, or other state of being).
