Objectively speaking, Jake (Jacob Artist) was one of Glee’s best performers. But as luck would have it, the writers chose to make his character abusive and problematic in an attempt to have fans root for Marley and Ryder, painting Ryder a hero and Jake a villain. A lot of it had to do with the fact Ryder’s character came off as boring and the writers couldn’t figure out a better way to resolve that apart for reinforcing a weird love triangle no one wanted. Meanwhile, Ryder’s actor (Blake Jenner) dated and abused Marley’s actor (Melissa Benoist) off set while the show was running. That is why she did not appear in Glee’s last episode and why she auditioned for Supergirl. Melissa and Jacob deserved better.
