Yikes, this summit is no joke, one of the most exposed summits of any major mountain

Hi. I've scaled all the highest peaks in Austria. This August I want to do the Matterhorn. When the video was taken, what month was it? Lots of snow for sure. I climb solo usually. Do you think that rope is required? A chance a friend may join me. I'm not big on being roped in, but I am good at taking advice. Thanks. BTW: Have ever done the Grossglockner in Austria? If not, I highly recommend it. Cheers, Rpd

Five hours to get to the summit without a guide is impressive (to me, a non mountaineer). Thanks for an enjoyable video.

Hiya, thanks 😊 I had been climbing for about 6 years but hadn't done anything like this before. I had all the foundation skills for multipitch climbing and had practised some moving together but made the rest up as we went. It wasn't too technical. The hardest part was the route finding and being extra careful on the way down when being tired. Lots of loose rock to dislodge!

Why do you have ropes? If one of you fall won't you pull the other down with you?

There are a few things you can try to do before you get pulled off with your partner. But yea, sometimes you would ask yourself how effective these things were.

Wow, you really had great weather on your trip, the views were spectacular! And you were almost alone? You must have had a lot of luck! I hope I'll be as lucky when I go! You really motivated me to do it without a guide, looks doable. Thank you for a great video!

The bit where you turn round and congratulate each other when you get to the summit. I wouldn’t be able to do that. I would be frozen in absolute fear.

Great video that, very informative and well put together. Two things I'd say though is I think a visit to the cemetery is a must before you climb to pay your respects, you might not get the chance after... And climbing down is the most dangerous bit so it's a shame there was no footage or talk of that bit. But that's me nitpicking. Great job!

Excellent report/video! How difficult was the descent?
@andybisme
@andybisme 4 жыл бұрын
It was tricky because of loose rock underfoot/occasionally from above and both being quite tired but easier due to being a series of abseils.

@Matt5bm
@Matt5bm 5 жыл бұрын
The train ride from Geneva to Zermatt is expensive indeed. But in Zermatt you can get by on a budget as there was supermarkets about and even a Mcds! It's very achievable on a budget but you must be sensible and again, the long train ride from Geneva airport is stunning but it isn't cheap. Try and book in advance perhaps.

+Trent Vonich (tvpatriot99) Sorry for late reply, a lot of climbing experience but first trip to the Alps. We had spend quite a bit of time researching the route but it definitely helped to keep up with the guides while it was dark. Then continued on at a crazy pace and we slowed a bit when the sun came up.

Although Mont Blanc is more my style of mountaineering the Matterhorn does look inviting. Excellent video and excellent achievement. I've been hearing for decades about how it is a mere walk up. Admittedly I'm disappointed at the number of anchors and fixed ropes I see in the video, but this is no walk up! I've been away from climbing for some time but that will change next year when I will resume mountaineering virtually full time. I'd love to tackle it (Matterhorn) but I believe that finances would keep me away. On top of airfare, rail fare, taxi fare, hotels, etc. I doubt I could afford to stay long enough to effectively acclimatize, bag both peaks, and experience a reasonable trip home. One quick question: are maps, trail guides, etc., available? I prefer to climb solo and don't wish to hire a guide, particularly after hearing/seeing/reading virtually 100% negative comments concerning others' experiences either with the guides individually or the guide companies. Therefore route finding would be a priority for me. Good maps and quality "trail guides" makes that task much less onerous. That and a college degree in cartography:-)

Threat_Dynamics The Matterhon is much more difficult than the Mont Blanc. I would argue that Mont Blanc is a walk-up. If you want something mroe challenging consider the Dufourpsitze (2nd highest mountain in the Alps for Mt. Blanc but more difficult) or the Matterhorn. A guide is essential. There are many top guides in Zermatt, just go to the Alpine center in downtown Zermatt and you can get sorted out with a guide.

Great video and well done, climbing didn't look too technical, it's those ridges that look intimidating. What climbing gear did you need to use, in terms of quick draws, krabs, slings etc? Was it all 'moving together' or is any of it pitching with proper belays? Thanks

GOD what BALLS! Hey could I like barrow them for enough time to climb the matterhorn? I was there in 2007 but just to do some site seeing. We stayed in that little hotel right next to the cemetary. I have freinds that live in Zurich and they paid our way to Zermatt. You guys are awesome!

Hi Andrew. Contrary to my last post, I've committed myself to tackling the Matterhorn in September, hoping to raise money for charity in doing so. I would like to make reference to your video to give potential sponsors a feel for what the challenge involves. Would you have any objection to this?
