Nice LOOKING trike. What is more important, riding or showing? Riding!

Not impressed. First of all, a taller rear tire is going to give you more top speed; going with a 20" rear wheel reduces your top speed, vs a 700 rear wheel. Second, you boast that you can climb any hill with your current gear/rear wheel set-up? You only have a 25.26 G.I. in your lowest gear. This is how you figure out your gear inch. Size of rear wheel 20"x front chain ring 24" ÷ by rear cog 19. = 25.26 g.i. That's NOT a good low climbing G.I. I'd say 15.5 g.i. or lower is going to climb up anything. I have a 14.8 g.i. on my Expedition. Now... I can climb a wall. Third, your trike, you can do whatever you want to, but nylon nuts and bolts??? I DON'T THINK SO! Fourthly, you shaving all these grams doesn't make one bit of difference speed wise, except maybe you tricked yourself into thinking it does. Because... as we all know, riding into a headwind or especially a ROUGH paved road surface will shave off your speed quicker than shaving grams off your trike. Weight weanies make me shake my head. SMH. Then they brag about how fast they are. Unless your rolling a full carbon fiber trike; frame, cranks, wheels with Titanium hardware everywhere else. Then your only playing tricks with your mind. Once again, your trike, but... it sorta looks micky mouse to me... hokie. Lastly, who are you racing??? What are your time trials??? Anotherwards, it's all pretty silly and pointless, unless you're getting sponsored and paid to go fast. There's a term for it..."a legend in your own mind." A full set of spokes isn't going to slow you down. If you really want to save some weight, drop your own weight by 10 lbs. or more.

true, putting effort into being more aero is more advantageous, and weight saving isnt going to help much on the level. but on any hill it will help a bike climb easier and always help with acceleration. depends where you live really. id bet the above trike is quicker than a stock 700 as its significantly lighter. of course, with a set of aero wheel covers it would be the dogs. but yes, aero is king. those very heavy velomobiles prove that. i dont really understand why folks complain the 700 is high geared. we have hills everywhere and ive never been in the granny gear yet
@The-GreenHornet5 жыл бұрын
@@andy-the-gardener, being aero, really doesn't make all that much difference, if any. It's a mental illusion. Like I stated, a headwind or rough road surface will shave off your speed quicker than shaving grams off your trike. Loose body weight.. 10 lbs - or more, and you'll shave A LOT more weight than spending all this "look at me, money" on components. Yeah, if you put a smaller wheel on the rear, of course you will accelerate faster, but will loose top end speed, that's just facts. Do whatever floats your boat, but don't misrepresent mathematical facts. Loose body weight, visit the bathroom, and enjoy riding the trike. Anything else, is just ego weight weanie mentality.

@@The-GreenHornet sorry, misunderstood your initial post. i thought you were defending being aero over obsessive weight saving. saying aero doesnt make much difference is ridiculous when everyone knows air resistance uses up watts in a sharply increasing, non linear manner as you go faster, while weight remains a constant factor. tt bikes are much faster than road bikes in spite of being heavier, and obviously velomobiles take the high weight, high aerodynamics to the logical conclusion, and are much faster than even aero tt bikes. all good road cyclists know being as aero as possible is necessary for speed, which is the reason for the lycra, shaving legs etc. if you wanna go fast, sure being light is good, but spend most attention on being aero because it is far more important. a heavy aerodynamic machine will always be faster than a lite machine with bad aerodynamics for the same power. imo this is a fine trike, but he could gain a free 2 mph on top speed by fitting wheel covers, like the greenspeed aero. spoked wheels produce massive drag while covered one hardly any, and there are 3 on a trike. as for a small wheel making acceleration faster or climbing easier. nope. there would be zero difference compared to a bike with a 700c wheel in the appropriate gear for its wheel size. likewise, a bike with small wheels top speed wont be less if it has a bigger chainring to compensate. the only difference is a small wheeled trike will be more aero, so should in theory be faster. personal weight saving is good. but what if your already lean.

Did you pick up any speed by replacing the 700 wheel with the 20 inch wheel? I am curious because I have a catrike expedition and I am replacing the 26 inch wheel with a 20 inch. I am not a fast rider, but I don't want to loose speed by replacing the rear wheel. Somehow it just makes more sense to me, because the smaller wheel should be stronger than the bigger wheel.

One question why not get some paint stripper and strip all the paint off to remove even more weight?

I bet this flys. i'd like to see proof it weighs 26lb as mine is 33lb stock, with no mudguards, bags, mirrors, bottle cage, ie stripped down to bare essentials. i just dont see where the 7lb loss comes from

Great ideas to make a trike faster! However there are a couple of errors: A 52 driving an 11 with a Durano in back would be around 87 gears inches not 95 That 52 driving an 11 at 100 rpm's would be going about 26 mph not 30 Check out Sheldon Browns Gear Calculator (I calibrate my spreadsheets using Sheldon's Calculator)
@jwsnyder50218 жыл бұрын
Dave...a few observations: You're getting 30mph with a 20" rear?? I went to a 700 on my Expedition because I was topping out with a 52 ring...you left all those spokes out, but you're running an old style BB with a square steel spindle and steel locks? Not to mention solid-arm crank? Try my setup: CeramicSpeed BB86 + carbon crank with alloy spindle...not you can put your spokes back. Try a med or short cage derailleur, you don't need the long cage, maybe you do with that tiny crank gear...I'm running a 52/39 with a Sram Red cassette 11-25, very light, the 25 gear is alloy...Aluminum bolts? Scary...I'm running all titanium bolts, even the 4" long for the underside pulley, also for the steering rod ends, then you can ditch those nylon bolts...also ceramic bearings on the front wheels; they'll spin forever.

So if you wanted to, you could drop the weight even more by getting rid of the rack, the bags and the other add-ons you put on the trike? Just curious. I have a tornado thats stock and it weighs in at around 43lbs. Great vid by the way.

Interesting mods. Some make sense to me, some don't. On ALL of your videos you mention keeping high cadence, so I know you completely get how to go fast with proper technique and endurance. High cadence = high fitness level. Dave, do you have any before and after metrics on actual performance you can share with us? i.e. AVG speed and heart rate before you did the mods and now that you've done them? Some of the mods simply reduced weight, others may have increased efficiency by reducing drag. Thanks for posting such interesting videos. I ride a Catrike Expedition with a 700c rear. Very nice trike! Very interested in the 16 spoke front wheels, they obviously hold up alright. What are your thoughts on converting to a 16 spoke rear? probably less weight on the rear on a trike and lower cornering loads too maybe? Agree with your thoughts on a smaller rear when to improve the handling. I've got a KMX Venom and was thinking of switching from 26" to 24" rear for the same reason. I've modded my trike with Hope hydraulic disc brakes, tiagra 50/34 chainset, fenders, shorter, flared chain tubes . I like your double idler but I think I'd still want a tube if only to keep oil off my leg! . Ive used klick fix handlebar bag mounts on the sides of the seat to fasten bags too.

I'm impressed you got your trike down to 26 pounds. I've got a 700 and it tips the scales at 38 pounds. That does include the stock 20/700 wheel combo, 12-36 cassette, pump, seat, lock, lights, and fender. I don't notice the weight until I hit a hill. As long as you ae happy, keep cutting those grams!

Cat Trikers and any one else that has interest ... FYI: I do own a KMX that I probably put $2,000 into it modifying. If any one has interest in a vid of it, please say? I still own the KMX but use it for slower social rides. I do like the KMX as it is about 2" off the ground. I prefer to ride the Cat 700 when riding alone which is about 95% of my rides. If any one has questions, please ask and I'll answer ASAP. Happy Trails with yo' Trike ... Indiana Dave
