I prefer this version to the Makerras recording that is also posted on KZbin. The diction of the chorus is clearer, and the overall quality of the sound is brighter.

Years after having made an excellent recording, with the fall of communism, the same performers (Neumann, Ludwig, Czech Philharmonic) return to perform at a very high level. Thanks to whoever posted. Neumann was one of the best conductors I saw live.At that time, the Czech Philharmonic did not have any women, only on harps. This has completely changed.

A mimo jiné ani jednou za záznam nebyla vidět 1. horna.
It’s a wonderful performance. I thought it was faultless.

The slower tempo of the first movement makes it more difficult to bring out the syncopated, jazzy rhythms which are essential to this modern symphony. Though composed by a European, this symphony is really more of an American symphony.

21:31 in the commercial recording by the same forces and conductor the trumpets play in the wrong transposition here giving a very unusual effect :)
@JensSeipolt6 ай бұрын
I love that wrong transposition. Secretly hoping that in reality all the other editions are wrong. 🙄
@OsvaCola2 ай бұрын
strangely in that passage the trumpets are in F and not in B flat. Maybe an editing problem. There is a similar problem in the fourth movement of Dvorak's New World

Wonderful to see Neumann live in concert with the Czech Phil. I have the Supraphon set of all 6 Martinu's symphonies with Neumann. His tempos in the 1st Symphony especially the 1st 2 movements are generally quite slow compared to other conductors yet this doesn't deter from full enjoyment. ( Compare this to the 1st Symphony with the Frankfurt Radio Orchestra conducted by Andres-Orazco who takes it at a faster pace ( especially the 2nd movt.). Martinu must be one of the most underated composers of the 20th Century . Less Haydn, Schubert and Schumann please and let's hear all the fantastic works of Martinu in our concert halls. ( ps were all the female members of the orchestra on vacation? I say that sarcastically. How things have changed since then)

Prey was in many ways the perfect Mahler singer. The natural beauty and warmth of his tone made the sadness bearable. Masterful use of the face and body in the service of expression too.

By far not the best version of this symphony, but the sound doesn't help and it is moving to see Neumann and his Czech Phil

Neumann was a great conductor sensitive to the composer, with rich detail, beautiful flow, not over the top but still exciting, his Mahler and Dvorak are wonderful filled with power and majesty. The Czech Philo is also tops and make perfect pairing with Neumann. Thanks for this recording.

Thank you very much for this video; it's the first recording I've heard of Neumann conducting, and (I think) the Czech Philharmonic playing. Interesting to hear how a native conductor and orchestra interpret Martinu, with a lot of colour which I never heard before and texture different from the studio recordings of this magnificent work. Thanks again!

So few comments! It might be an overrated work but the personnel here are well nigh perfect.
It is actually an excerpt of “Etuda o zkoušce” (Etude About Rehearsal) by director Ewald Schorm.

Bravo.

The video quality is funky, but this performance is fantastic, with Jan Kubelik's Violin Concerto No. 4 being particularly interesting and exciting. Who knew? A plus is the older Czech Philharmonic sound - violins with a nicely bite to then, the prominence given to the winds and brass, and beautifully phrased and paced.
Thanks so much for the video! would you know the names of the soloists?

@@VaclavNeumannSetkani Thank you for your reply! Maestro Vaclav Neumann is my favorite conductor, but I don't have any videos of him...
