Hi Dave, Thank you for your thoughful and informative review of this great lens! As a landscape, product and wildlife photographer, I use the Z8 with the Nikkor Z 180-600 f/5.6-6.3, with pretty good results. However, based on your comments and some research, aside from my initial thought of superior sharpness of the 100-400, my other reason for wanting to trade the 180-600 towards the 100-400, is simply that it is quite a bit easier to handhold in the field (when not using a tripod or monopod). I recently borrowed it from a friend who has both lenses, and I was impressed by the ergonomics and relative ease of handholding (and still having the option to shoot in DX mode, bringing the equivalent focal length (at 400) to close to 600mm.) Not to mention the ability to shoot at a lower ISO at 400, permitting better results if cropping is required. So, have you ever done a comparison between these 2 fantastic lenses? Thank you, and Happy Holidays!
@KnightsandWeekends19 күн бұрын
Thanks for the kind words. I have thought about doing a comparison, but since the focal length range is so different it might be hard to directly compare. However, I do have a personal preference and might share what and why.

Thanks for the video. I ordered one for my Nikon Z8 and another for my Nikon 7ii. I had ordered what I thought was a good eye cup off Amazon ($25 US), but it broke in a few months. You get what you pay for. Good price considering what you paid for your camera gear in total.

Does your lens make the grinding noise when focusing? I got one last month, the grinding noise was so loud. I called Nikon, they said that the way it is of this lens. So I returned it.

Love the VDO, having question when using this 400mm, do you need UV Filter?

No, not unless you think you'll be using it in harsh conditions. Any slight UV influence on images can be easily corrected in post.

Hi, I also got hot card warning taking stills in burst mode at 15fps losless raw. I thought you only get hot card warning taking vidieo. A week earlier I took 20fps losless raw and no problem. The only downside was in burstmode it stutter within 3 seconds, so I now let camera and card checked by Nikon Service Point to see what the problem is, either camera or my Sandisk Extreme Pro CFexpress Type B 256gb card.
@KnightsandWeekendsАй бұрын
Sandisk cards are not considered high enough performance. You should try a faster card.

HI DAVE, IVE BEEN CONSIDERING PURCHASING THIS LENS BUT WITH THE TAMRON 50-400 JUST ANOUNCED FOR HALF THE PRICE AND THE GOOD REVIEWS IM TEMPTED TO WAIT FOR THE RELEASE OF THE TAMRON. TOU CANT ATTACHED ENTENDERS TO THE TAMRON BUT THATS NOT A BIG DEAL FOR ME. ANY THOUGHTS ON THIS WOULD BE APPRECIATED. THAN YOU
@KnightsandWeekendsАй бұрын
So hard to answer this for another person. I don't know what your typical uses would be, or what your tolerance is for sacrifice. I will say that I have nothing against Tamron lenses, but I would not expect the sharpness, consistency, or integrity level of the Nikkor S-line glass. That said - for most occasions, the Tamron should be good and will save you lots of money.

My concern with the 180-600 for sports is not at the 600mm end but at the 180mm end. Most reviews of the 180-600 tout it as a wildlife lens but you don't usually have wildlife coming from 50 yards away (great for 500-600mm) to within 10 yards (where sometimes even 100mm is too much) within a few seconds. But that's a regular occurrence in American football. So I'd still like to see someone's thoughts on real world use of the 180-600 for sports across the entire range of the lens, not just at 600mm.
@KnightsandWeekendsАй бұрын
Good points, and I'd love to get out and shoot some football with it. I just don't have any credentials for anything going on. The surfing I shot was a close second though, as I shot surfers from about 50 yards in to 15 or so.

Any thoughts on how it works if you wear glasses?
@KnightsandWeekends5 ай бұрын
I wear prescription glasses when not wearing my contacts - and almost always wear sunglasses when shooting. I have no problem. The cup is soft and conforms to the glasses without pushing on them, and blocks side light nicely.

Well, actually the MC-N10 is a good start, but definitely missing key features such as focusing, focus pulling with A-B points, reviewing and deleting video clips as we shoot along. I simply cannot use this for video for these reasons . Otherwise this would have been a must-have accessory for video .... shame, really

Late to the party but you state that the balance changes as you zoom in or out. Not true as this lens has what Nikon terms “Inner Balance Technology” which insures the center of gravity does not change. In my experience, this feature definitely works.

I may have made that statement based on the fact that the lens telescopes. That would be my error for making too quick an assumption... appreciate your feedback on it.

Great review, great lens, great photos. Thank you. There is an opinion that this lens is also suitable for portrait photography, who likes to use long focal length lenses. Could you confirm this idea? Thank you in advance for your response.
@KnightsandWeekends6 ай бұрын
Thanks for the kind words! I haven't really done any portraits with the lens, but it would absolutely be good for that. The clarity and sharpness are fantastic, and at focal lengths from 100 - 150 or so it would perform much like a conventional portrait lens and has the aperture range to provide nice soft backgrounds and excellent sharpness.

Would this converter work with the Nikkor Z DX 50-250 lens? And that would make that lens a 500 mm zoom?

Why doesn’t Nikon include an Arca-Swiss foot on every lens with a foot? It’s not that they have their own proprietary system competing against AS systems. That baffles me

Thank you for sharing. Very informative. There does appear to be significant differences in the results between the various hot card/camera reviews that I’ve watched and it’s not immediately clear why. Obviously the variables as you say such as card, ambient temperature, video códex affect the outcome

I have the older 70-400 Nikon. I've had it many years and use it almost every day. I mostly go out hunting birds but sometimes I'm after flowering plants and sometimes even street photography. It has progressed from the D-200, D-300, D-800E and has been on the D-850 since it first hit the market. It just gets better with every step-up in camera quality. I couldn't begin to estimate how many hundreds of thousands of images I have made with it and it still looks great with no blemishes and still makes sharp and beautiful bird pictures. If I ever replace it it will be with the Z100-400 and a new mirrorless camera. It is easy to carry, focuses fast, and had the right zoom range for hand held work.

That's awesome that you could get your photography channel off the ground. I had over 900 survival and primitive technology videos on KZbin. I was also very interested in photography. I started another channel, and it never did anything, so I pulled all the videos. I figure if nothing happens in 4 years, it's time to pull the plug. At least my books do well.
