88 Minesweeper. You’re either sitting on your ass, cleaning or driving, or driving other people and sitting on your ass until whoever you drove is done training and then drive back. Down range, you drive and sponge up bullets and find all the IEDs. Out in a war zone, you’re either a driver or a gunner. Lots of experience learning weapons systems and cross training.

I did 64C (now 88M) training at Ft. Carson, Co. in 1972. 6 weeks, 5 of them were in the field. We learned on 2 1/2 ton and 5 ton trucks. The old duce and a half didn't have power steering, the hardest vehicle to drive. But we NEVER went on regular roads. All our training was tactical. I attended training in November and December, and we had mud trails, hill that were iced, and the driving course included everything a driver would ever face. We would get stuck and have to wench ourselves out. This all in 30 degree weather when the sun was out. You have a pretty good hill that you had to drive down, and if the instructor at the bottom of the hill saw your breaks lock up, he'd make you go again. I think I went probably 15 times. But when we finished the course we could drive through anything.
