Paul is one of the few musical geniuses alive. He always knew the bands, he always had the right song at his fingertips. No one knows music better. Don’t underestimate Paul.
@Pet-f2l21 күн бұрын
Paul should have known it would be better for bands like his one to play without his help.

Eugene Chadbourne mentions in a video about being asked for money so Pere Ubu could go to this gig. I don't think he did give them any money.

Not the first time that a keyboardist that works with the Residents has been on national TV, without the Residents. I've seen Feldman a number of times in various bands, including when he played with the Pixies and Pere Ubu at the same show.

Heads up to all anti-misogynists out there: the lead singer of this band makes shitty comments about women between songs during shows, and the rest of the band goes along with it

Ben Walivaara That's good maybe he took what I said (or ya know, yelled) to heart. Randomly in between songs he starts talking about Star Trek and then the "punch line" of the bit is something like, "The one crazy thing about that show was, I don't know about you guys but I would never follow a WOMAN into space! Haha!" Like of all topics, first of all, and then of all star trek related things to say? Then I yelled "hey man womenare smart and don't need that shit!" and he responds, "Good thing I don't care what you think! don't you have a protest to be at?"

I hear this band had a big influense on the Swedish band Bob Hund, and that they call themselves a "avant garage" band. Now that I've seen this clip, and a couple of others, I find them...well, mainstream, actually. More garage than avant.

I'm pretty sure the Commitments movie was early nineties like 91 so I don't think this was from 89 but rather early nineties. Just looked up and the album is called "World's in Collision"(not collusion like Dave erroneously said)and is from 91 so there you go.

Great stuff. Something about Letterman's show, and I don't think I noticed it at the time, is that Shaffer and his guys did NOT just phone this stuff in. They knew what these bands were about and they prepared and they participated. It shows a level of respect for the bands AND the audiences that's pretty great to see in action.

Saw them in Philly at JC Dobbs just prior to this appearance, and yes, they were passing the hat to help pay expenses as Mercury had just cut off promotional support for the band.

it was originally a writing by Emile Zola against the French government. But it's been used since then to precede an accusation - and more & more used in comedy as a parody of extreme outrage. Uh, that's why this scene is funny to me... in fact, it's by far the funniest thing about the whole movie.

Yes, that's Eric Drew Feldman, who played with Beefheart, Snakefinger, Ubu and others. Don't miss the fact that Paul is participating here as well. These guys were not just some freaks that hitch hiked to get there. Paul dug them, it's obvious and was probably responsible for getting them on the show in the first place. A rare masterpiece on American TV.
