maybe we could use these alloys in belts and the heat from friction and other waste heats could lessen drag and improve efficiency in things like engines.

The sad ball is usually made of some mix of polynorbornene, which is a rigid rubbery polymer that turns vibrational energy into heat energy.

Odd choice to dub English with English... only to have a narrator who also has a non-American accent? The Chinese speakers speak English just fine btw

This is probably a NITINOL wire, which has been heat-trained to remain straight whenever subjected to the transformation temperature or beyond, and the water is also at boiling or at some higher temperature, therefore the wire is trying to get straightened but is unable to due to the loop constraint, thus forcing the wire tangentially whenever it touches the water, and creating a motor effect.

I have been looking at trying to make a composite bamboo material but Im running into the usual issues. These are my criteria: 1) 70% Bamboo (pref fiber) 2) Natural adhesives and/or resin 3) Non toxic My issues: 1) It would seem that no matter what way you go about it, its extremely labor intensive to produce ... even more so to produce in bulk 2) Requires custom built machinery and huge work spaces 3) The matting process seems (at least from my novice perspective) to be next to impossible to achieve ... if you have any pointers that would be helpful. If you prefer not to add this on comments you welcome to email me on [email protected]

I believe metallic glasses are a massive step. Their traits induce a wide band of possibilities and applications. Research regarding such materials has unlocked great knowledge and exploration should be further encouraged by the scientific community.

@paparockman You'd be shocked at what was created 50-100 years ago. People have been taught growing up to feel that "now" is a wonderful state of superiority, no matter how much we think it sucks. It's kind of a coping mechanism. The reality is that people create stunning things all the time, but whoever is around then either can't find a use for it, can't find someone who will or can make a lot of it, or its just something people don't notice.

@4jeremy9 MSE Professor and Chair Robert M. Briber replies: "If the molecular weight (i.e. length of the chain) is too low then it will not 'pull' itself out of the can continuously. There would be no effect from atmospheric conditions on this process. In general the effect of atmospheric conditions would be negligible compared to force of gravity pulling the chain out of the can."
@Anglerwave
@Anglerwave 13 жыл бұрын
@materialsatumd is it possible that the molecular weight could not be heavy enough to "pull" the rest of the material from out of the container due to some atmospheric conditions under chaotic behavior/strange attractors?

@4jeremy9 Hello from the University of Maryland and thanks for your interest in our video. Could you please rephrase or elaborate on your question? We did not quite understand what you were asking. Also, are you referring to the properties of polymers in general, or to the model used in the demo? Please let us know and we'll do our best to reply.
