It's a bit of a catch 22, I want it to have enough time to decompose so the compost is ready in the spring, but as you say I want to delay/slow the breakdown until the colder months. I guess I will see how it works this year and then adapt it next year if it worthwhile continuing with

Great video, thank you! Love the side by side pictures. Does it have to be in a dark place?

It is best to dry in a dark place to preserve as much of the colour in the flowers as possible. That said, I ended up drying some in the house last year in an un-darkened room and I didn't notice any noticeable difference.

First time viewing your channel, went back to see if you had a video showing results of your tuber storage, but didn’t see one. How did it work? I am in the pacific northwest in the US, and despite copious amounts of winter rain, folks here (as I have previously) leave tubers in ground. Even after last winter’s week of colder than normal temps, there were no losses. However, I’ve expanded my collection into some raised beds and am a bit concerned about how they will do. So, I’m binging everyone’s tuber storage videos lol. I think I’m digging a few and leaving a few to see how it goes.

This year I lost some of the odd smaller tubers that I stored. These were first year tubers and I think, I let them get too dry. But, otherwise all was good, thankfully! I don't leave my tubers in the ground because I have clay soil, so the water hangs around and is more likely to rot them. Maybe leave a few sacrificial tubers in your raised beds, and if they survive you will know you should be ok the following year. It's all a bit trial and error really!

Oh wow, Nicola! I love these dahlias when dried- so beautiful. I had no idea they could be dried. I am definitely going to have a go at doing this. Thank you for a great video tutorial. I wonder if putting a fan in the room, near the drying dahlias would help the drying process? years ago I was put off drying large flowers because of the faff with silica gel- this looks fun and more attainable. Happy gardening 🙂

Hi, I am a new subscriber. Thank you for your. fabulous video. I have added some more varieties to my wishlist now. May I ask how on earth does one dry dahlias please? Thank you. I have so many favourite dahlias, but I do love Mango Madness, French can-can, Richard's fortune, American dawn, Sweet Natalie, Otto's Thrill, Fairway Pilot and David Howard plus all the Bishop's children I have grown from seed. I think my absolute favourite could be Fairway Spur, I do love many of your dahlias and have added Sweet Natalie and American Dawn to my list on seeing yours.Happy gardening 🙂

I’m so glad to hear this. This is my very first year of planting and I have been really concerned about what and when to plant. All of the five that you mentioned, I am happy to report that I have all of them started as seed!! I hope they will do well. Are snapdragons a slow germination? They seem kind of weak but this is my first run with this.

snapdragons are sooooo slow. They germinate ok, but then just stick at being tiny for a long time. I've found that if I transplant them it kind of kicks them into action. By sowing them now, it's fine leaving them as you don't want them to get too big while they are overwintering.

I may be wrong, but when you spoke of the campanula, your photo appeared to show a ballon flower. I grow both the peach-leaved campanula & the Canturbury Bells campanula for cutting. I haven't found the balloon flower to be a good cut flower, though I ❤ them! Thank you for the point about growing only one color of foxglove, I didn't know that and it certainly explains what's been going on with mine over the past few years 😯. Your dalias are stunning as usual 🤩! Really enjoy your videos, and I share your enjoyment with drying flowers to create during the months I can't be out gardening here in Michigan 🇺🇸.

Thank you. I've never heard of a balloon flower, but following a quick google they do look remarkably similar to the smaller campanula that grows here, I always thought it was campanula anyway - I could be wrong!

If I grow these in trays this month (September) do I have to plant them out this year. Or can I keep them in pots until spring (in my potting shed)? Or could they be kept out doors over winter if I pot them on? Thanks!

Any of those options should be ok depending on how cold it gets where you are. I'm keeping the majority of my seedlings in my unheated greenhouse overwinter and will be planting them out in spring

I sowed my hardy annuals at the end of February and popped them in the coldframe and greenhouse and they were fine ,all were popped out after hardening off the end of March and most were in flower by July so I'm going to stick to that as it's lovely and quiet in Febuary garden wise 🙂 I tried those 60 cell Dowding trays and hated them .I blocked a lot and that was much better .

That sounds like a great plan. Theoretically, there isn't enough warmth and daylight at that time of year for me, plus I don't like gardening in the cold😂 but if I've killed everything by them I will give it a go

Lovely to see your patch and to see I am not the only one feeling a bit frazzled at this stage of the growing season. I have adopted the belt and braces approach to seed planting, half the seedlings go out into the patch and half stay safely inside the polytunnel to grow a bit bigger and hopefully can stand up to the brutal slug/snail attacks. 🤞
@brambleandbeyond

I think it's the sensible approach. If the outside ones survive you can forgo the inside ones, or double up on your harvest. Win/win!

Snapdragons showed up on their own in my flower bed last spring. I let them grow and loved them, but I didn't really do much in the way of harvesting seeds. This spring, I had a bunch more snapdragons growing, so I'm assuming the seeds fell to the soil and did their own thing. I'm in Canada. We had temps of -30C and still they did fine. I added a few of the seed pods from the previous year and they took off, too. Love them so much, I went to a green house and bought a few extra. And the really great thing where I live ... the deer don't like them! Deer eat so many other flowers, but they don't touch the snapdragons or marigolds, so that's what dominates my flower bed.
@brambleandbeyond
@brambleandbeyond Ай бұрын

I love your Sweet Nathalie, thanks for sharing, I'll be growing it next year! A top slug tip (which I got from Halls of Heddon) is to make "slug hotels" and then you can pick off the slugs easily. I use a plank of wood, or old roof tiles and the slugs love to hide under, I check and dispose of slugs on a daily basis! After a few weeks the slug population is all but gone. Jowey Winnie is a superb dahlia, I've grown 5 plants this year, long vase life and worth growing. Thanks for the video, very enjoyable.
