Hi Jon, I know this is an older video but would you have some advice on where I can get Montomorency or Balaton cherries fresh? i live in Boston and usually drive to NH for cherry picking season but the u-pick farms all focus on the sweet varieties, and I never see tart cherries at the supermarkets or farmer's markets.

Which rootstock is best for Ambrosia, in your opinion? On MM106 he is very tall. They also say that the length of the growth affects the size and M9 cannot be used for Ambrosia. Thank you!

I found that Pawpaw trees don't like any notching. The bark did not heal, and a wound developed at the notch that resulted in the loss of the upper stock.

Great experiment. I don't use tall spindle, but in general, I have found notching to be extremely effective in inducing bud break in most fruit trees that I've tried it on. So far sweet cherries have been the most resistant. I have used it on dormant buds, very small buds, pushing buds and even extended shoots early in the season to encourge them to become more vigorous and dominant if they are growing weakly. The majority of my experience is still on apples, which seem maybe especially responsive. The future of fruit tree training is going to be much smarter and work with plant physiology like this to get much more specific desired results.

it takes the trees longer to fill the space. You're effectively making 1 tree take the place of 3-8 super spindle apples; so the early yields will be lower. Long-term, you're not going to see much of a difference year-to-year, once you get to full canopy fill. The trials in NZ are showing noteworthy gains in yields compared to TSA. The nice thing is that you can plant these 7'x7' on Geneva 890, M7, and Bud118 (if your soil is shallow and sandy like mine, otherwise might consider a Geneva 202 at that spacing (by way of reference, my TSA planting on B9 and M9 failed spectacularly, I ended up ridging soil above the graft to gain some vigor in the trees)) and keep your establishment costs lower due to a shorter trellis (my top wire is at 7', trees are topped at 8') and only having 890 trees/ac, versus 1200+ / ac for TSA and close to 2000+ /ac for SSA. The biggest thing for the espalier/cordon/hedged systems is that you are able to and have to move your rows closer together, this has the added benefit of making the orchard more pedestrian. Greater light interception per acre tends to increase yields, at the very least, I've noticed improved color and ripening consistency with the thinner canopy.

Very good overview of the different varieties - thank you for this! May I ask: have you experimented with interstems in the UMass orchard? I am wondering whether the use of an interstem (say, Bud-9 on top of Bud-118) would allow for high-density planting without a permanent support structure, due to the better anchorage of the rootstock.

It’s hit and miss here in central NJ as well. The 17 degree temperature this spring hit some apples hard. I applied carbaryl at 3-5 mm and got good thinning. Apples thinned further just recently(some golf ball size!). Peach crop is about 30% of normal with complete loss of early blooming varieties. Tart cherries crop about the same as peaches and the birds consumed every cherry - never happened before with tart cherries. Overall, unpick numbers are reason but people are not excited to see higher fruit prices resulting from inflation and I’m noticing smaller amounts being picked. I guess you have to buy gas to stay alive but you can skip you annual strawberry outing when things get tight.

Jon plz tell me which rootstock is best for Apple G969 or G 890
@jmcext
@jmcext 2 жыл бұрын
Both are good. 890 if you want a larger, free-standing tree. 969 for tall-spindle or verticla axis, needs support. 969 can crop very heavily, too heavily, have to watch that.
