Thank you so much for this important conversation. I’m ready Polly’s book at the moment & it’s such an amazing piece of work. As a chronically ill person every page speaks to me.

To be honest, I think Deborah Smith should receive the Nobel Prize, not Han Gang.. Han Gang's reputation was not even close to Lee Mun-yeol or Hwang Seok-young and any other renowned now-deceased Korean novelists including Park kyung lee or Kim dong lee etc., in Korean literature society. but Han has become so big after Deborah's translation.. I wonder if Han's novels have sizable literary value when read in Korean. Deborah should translate truely great Korean novelists other than Han gang.

deborah can translate not just the meaning but the feelings of the text. She for sure is a great translator but I think han is great as well. Deborah is absolutely amazing tho

Great at explaining racial violence and the foundational nature of American life. She’s right you need to see rural Black poverty, the precursor to urban black poverty. We the ideal readers are waiting for a narrative of the Marroonish, the renegade, the captives who died escaping or lived miraculously - use that magical realism- if you must. But this story just mourns and reiterates the abominations of life for the captive. Why are we here⁉️How are we here now on the eve of the election of a home grown fascist wanted by the majority of the electorate it seems⁉️. It is absurd to say from the safety of the new millennium that you cannot hate the plantation. I don’t get that. But I do understand it as Stockholms syndrome.I simply can’t embrace it anymore than I’d hug a ravenous lion. There’s another history. An oral history, journals, an underground. Burn that plantation and use those ashes to make ink. Burn it. Why would you think your open enemies would plan a community for you🤷🏽‍♀️ Absurd. Until we deal with what is, we’ll have the same old novel over and over and over. Baldwin was correct: Everybody’s protest novel. It’s tiresome.

Thanks for this discussion . However, I'm interested to hear from lesbian authors. Lesbians have been marginalised and continue to be so. This invisibility is being perpetuated here. Whilst the content is interesting the examples omit lesbians. Im still saying this aged 50, it's disappointing.

I have written a great deal of sort of "structural poetry" where the format is meant to form elocution. I read Year zero Tokyo recently, having bought it in a thrift store and absolutely loved it. Thank you David! I enjoyed your format, and it was fantastic and encouraged imagination!
