I was an up-and-coming comedy magic act in 1978 and fortunate to spend my first summer season at Cromer Pier, top of the bill Denny Willis and Johnny Mack and Millican and Nesbit (the singing miners). Johnny Mack was the straight man to Denny. I shared his dressing room for the 4 month season; I am so grateful to have seen and worked with them. Denny was a polite and reserved gentleman, while Johnny (the straight man ) was funny and exuberant, taught me so much about showbiz, and was also a prolific letter writer (I have a few ). It is now a period lost in the haze of time. All but myself and another act on the bill are all dead now.

This is far more impressive that whatever Hollywood does with swordfighting these days. Admittedly some stuff like turning would be risky but I could tell who's attacking and defending and who's vulnerable and not.

When i was 12, Jaap had his violin lesson the hour after me, and Isabelle Van Keulen the hour before me in a small town called Uithoorn, Holland. I walked in listening to Isabelle, and left hearing Jaap warming up. Anybody understands why my teacher Mr. Bakker never succeeded in convincing me to take up violin as a profession...?? Many years later, Jaap works in Dallas, and I live in Houston... I did allright for me, helped built a upstart pipelay company Allseas from the ground up, look at them today...

When Kaye & Crosby refer to Jolson, Benny, and Hope in the latter-portion of the song, as a kid, I wouldn't've had a clue who they were. I knew who Hope & Benny were but doubt I picked-up on their names when mentioned in the song. Jolson's name would've meant nothing to me at all as a child. It's fun to hear the references to 3 such giants as these now.

I can't choose my favorite song/scene from this movie! They're all so fun and good!
