The nagamaki is the go between for a naginata and the katana. Some say the nodachi, but I beg to differ. Not sure who the performer in this is but it was perfect technique keeping the right hand above the left in direction to the blade. Well done.
@georgefreesamurai3 ай бұрын
A very nice post! Thanks for that!! Since the weapon is very old and there is not that much tradition, there are different philosophies about it. Some change hands fluently, like with the Yari and Naginata. Treat the other one like a kata and leave your hands on the top right and bottom left, as you also recommended. I agree with you. Thanks for the confirmation!!! Kenshi George

You better study a traditional, original koryu, or else every movement is a suicide mission. For both
@georgefreesamurai4 ай бұрын
Thanks for the contribution. But I don't really understand the criticism. It is of course fundamental to learn basic techniques and to be able to execute them cleanly and safely. But cutting in the air or against a rigid blade alone won't win a fight. And after all, isn’t that what swordsmanship is all about? To defeat your opponent in a duel? And this also includes dynamics, improvisation, attitude, dealing with fear and adrenaline, tactics, and cunning. A real fight doesn't always look pretty and ideal. The opponent must be defeated. And no fight can be won with pure, clean basic techniques. So why don't you think it's legitimate to try out a sparing drill?

They know their stuff! Correct
@natknutson14825 ай бұрын
I wouldn't say that, it has half the reach of all polearms. One well trained spearman and you're screwed.
@georgefreesamurai4 ай бұрын
I agree with you. If someone is good with the spear, with the range and the point exertion of power, he is a difficult opponent to defeat. But the spear is ineffective in rooms. And once you have overcome the distance of the top, then it also gets tricky. A Nagamaki can be used as a ranged weapon, as well as in closer combat. That's a big advantage of this weapon!
@natknutson14824 ай бұрын
@@georgefreesamurai in close combat it becomes cumbersome and clumsy, the standard sword is far more effective in that situation. Again, that weapon is not ideal. It's like war elephants, it looks cool but it's impractical.

Good morning. I have another comment. Yesterday I saw a black and white samurai film "KILL" that takes place in the Edo period. In the last 10 minutes, the farmers take to the streets and you can see that they are also carrying thicker cords in the shape of a tatsugi. Maybe my idea with the ropes isn't so unrealistic after all. But I have no idea whether that's also portrayed historically in the film or whether it's fiction.

Hello, I can't tell you what the Chiburi is called. During my research I searched for a long time and found different ones. But the names were rarely included. I don't even know if there is always an official name. Each sword still is perhaps unique. A friend of mine also made a Chiburi video and then derived some of the names. I'll send you the link...

i recently got a nodachi of this same size and steel type and your work with it is very impressive the stability and use of movement is very good
@georgefreesamurai6 ай бұрын
Thank you for the very positive comment. A blade of this length cannot simply be used like a katana. I underestimated that too. The inertia of the mass prevents rapid cutting sequences. Therefore, you have to use them and keep the kings moving with ideal rotations. The left hand on the back of the king is reinforced and stabilized. Have fun training with your weapon.
