Probably won't be broken anytime soon, all gifted athletes choose 100m and 200m instead, because that's where the money is.

Are you telling me Carl Lewis broke the record first, and then Powell? What was happening in Tokyo?

Mike Powell or Carl Lewis should have talked Usain Bolt into doing the long jump and offered to give him some serious coaching to jump 9 metres.

If Usain Bolt had done the long jump, the record may have been threatened. Lewis had that top (sub 10 sec) 100m speed before he took off from the board... Powell ran 100m in 10.4 secs... so Bolt would have that speed... get my drift ? I will always rate Lewis a better long jumper than Powell, even though Powell has the two longest jumps in history.

Bob Beamon held the record from 1968 - 1991 , and now Mike Powell from 1991 - 2024.

Other than me who can't shake the feeling that if two jumps in a row both breaks the world record, and the latter stands to this day over 30 years later, there could be a measurement problem? I mean... could that actually happen?

Any world record from the 80s or early 90s that still stands to today is very suspect imo. This was the ers before the serious drug testing of track and field athletes was introduced. What we just witnessed was two roid heads peaking leading to superhuman jump results. I seriously doubt 9m can be beaten by a non doped athlete, but who knows maybe a complete freak will be born, a new GOAT to obliterate all these dopes.

Stuart Storey was a brilliant athletics commentator. Steve Cram seemed to take over all the top events in some sort of coup in the late 90s.

I tried walking this length in my living room, but I ran out of steps to go before I got to my bookshelfs. I can't even understand that this is real. It looks shorter when watching the video though, but if it's really almost 9 meters, it's crazy far. Imagine having Mike Powell and Carl Lewis in some kind of danger high up in the mountain, and they just jump 8 meters to the next mountain out of danger xD!
