In my opinion, the story would've been a lot more interesting if her journey ended along with those 2 kids from the water fountain survive and get to the ship.

Yesss... I couldn't agree more! The kids at the water fountain were such a compelling part of the story. Their survival and eventual escape would have been a fantastic climax. It would have given the film a more hopeful and uplifting ending, while still maintaining the tension and suspense...
