Man, I really love SCT. Thank you so much for sharing this lovely work! I was curious and procrastinating on some other work, so I looked into the wonky credits - especially since it seemed so ironic not to be able to credit the bassist on a channel designed to feature bass music! Information I can find through the New York Public Library says Craig Brown was the double bassist for _Coleridge-Taylor: Chamber music_ released by Centaur in 2004. On Presto, the same album lists both Fadial and Orenstein as having played the clarinet quintet, and Fadial the African Dances. Perhaps one or the other accidentally got listed for the Nonet, as well. [There's also another KZbin score video of the Nonet put out by the channel "University of Rochester 3D Audio," which appears to be associated with Harley himself, as it links to his UoR faculty page featuring numerous other videos from the same account. In that video description, not only does it list Brown as the bassist, but Fadial as the violinist. And if that account is truly Harley, I'd probably trust him to remember who he played with!]

This is one of the pieces that Martin composed during the early/mid 1930s, when he was deeply immersed in a study of Schoenberg's 12-tone theory, to find out what its implications might be for his own music. Along with the contemporary Trio for Strings, this is the work with most extreme harmonic astringency in his catalogue. Martin's characteristic lyricism nevertheless often emerges, as does his sense of humor.

Very interesting. I don't know a lot about this composer. Is there another work from him you would recommend? Not necessarily a chamber music work by the way.

@@contrebasseclassique Orchestral: the Petite Symphonie Concertante, the Concerto for 7 Wind Instruments, the Etudes for String Orchestra and the Ballades for solo instruments (Saxophone, Flute, Trombone, Piano, Cello and Viola) with orchestra; also his late masterpiece Polyptyque for violin solo and double string orchestra. Choral: the Mass for Double Choir a cappella (his most popular work), the 5 Ariel Songs (his only English-language piece), the full-scale oratorios In Terra Pax and Golgotha. Solo voice with piano or orchestra: 6 Monologues from "Jedermann." He conducted a recording of the latter with baritone Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, paired with the 3 Excerpts from "Der Sturm" ("The Tempest"), his Shakespeare opera, with the same soloist. Piano solo: 8 Preludes for Piano, Fantasy on Flamenco Rhythms. Most of his chamber music dates from relatively early in his career, before the formation of his "mature" style; I particularly recommend the Piano Quintet, the Pavane couleur du temps and the Piano Trio on Irish Folk Tunes. All of these can be found here on KZbin. Happy listening!

Splendid performance! Up to now I had only been familiar with this early work via the sheets on IMSLP but to hear it is lovely. Already in the opening bars we hear Poulenc's faux-rococo that he'll employ later in Les Biches. The valse is the most Satie-esque. The "Madrigal" also appears in his five impromptus (#3) for piano. For the ambitious there's much to reap in transcribing his score for a short animation titled Sleeping Beauty (search "Alexandre Alexeieff - Sleeping Beauty" on youtube). I'm guessing the original parts are long-gone. In the Final mvmt of Gendarme we can hear the same motif enfantine employed in the closing dance scene of Sleeping Beauty.

Hi licoricestic. Thanks for your comment. Since you seem to know a lot about Poulenc, do you know any other chamber music work with double bass from him? Or any other chamber music work with double bass from any other composer that I could add to my channel?
@licoricesticАй бұрын
@@contrebasseclassique For Poulenc sadly no. Off the top of my head there’s Gould’s “Benny’s gig” (8 duos for clarinet & bass) written for Benny Goodman.

Hey there! I'm the host who put together the audio you're using (and trombonist in the last movement)! If anyone seeing this likes the music, I highly recommend checking out our original video (linked in description), which features some art my friend Luke made that I think is a great fit for this quirky little suite. And since this is a score video, it's worth mentioning that there are minor differences between the score here and what we played. They aren't major, but there are occasional discrepancies between the score and parts in this set on IMSLP, and also with what I've heard from performances of the original play this suite came from. With engraving help from dpMusicman (who also performed some of the percussion parts), we assembled what I guess you could call a critical edition of this piece, trying to select whichever option seemed most internally consistent wherever discrepancies were present. Little details like 8th-8th vs dotted 8th-16th, or mute changes. Anyway, I hope you enjoyed the performance! Poulenc's music is always a delight, and while this is clearly an early work, his irresistible charm comes through so clearly.

Hi dfloob22. Thanks for reaching out!!! I really like your interpretation of this suite. I didn't know about the discrepancies. And thanks too for pointing that out. I will check that out, for sure. Quick question for you: do you know where the score I found in IMSLP comes from? Christian
@dfloob22Ай бұрын
@@contrebasseclassique Thank you! I don't have full information or anything (I started from the IMSLP parts and haven't personally seen any other scores), but it looks like around the same time as this was uploaded, the user who uploaded it said on their user page that they were transferring scores from the Spanish National Library. So that'd be my guess. Incidentally, the only other performance of this suite that I'm aware of (which is on youtube) is almost certainly off of the parts on IMSLP, or ones with identical editorial differences. So I'm not sure if other copies even exist!
