He rose to another level when he not only returned to music after winning his life back from illness, but also dedicated effort to helping others stricken with leukemia. And he was still singing right up to the covid pandemic. His strength, dedication, and professionalism, to say nothing of his talent, will stand the test of time.

Stunningly beautiful voice. Verdi's "Un Giorno di Regno" embodies youth, love and innocence. This opera deserves to be heard much more. This recording featuring Sr. Carreras along Jessye Norman and all others, is one of my very favorite complete opera recordings.

After the phrase that is the title of the song most (all?) tenors take a quick catch breath before singing the next phrase. Carreras doesn't. He sings both phrases on one breath. This is remarkable. It is also musically correct. There is no rest there in the sheet music. This means only Carreras sings this song correctly. Probably because only he can sing it properly. Hvorostovsky the late great baritone also sang that way - long legato phrases. I once took a test of vital capacity as part of a health exam for a new job. I amazed the doctor. I was off the chart. He said he had never seen someone with so much breath. I guess they didn't get a lot of singers applying for this job as a statistical researcher. I sang operatic bass for many decades. I always had problems with lack of breath. There were phrases that always gave me trouble like the Sarastro aria "In Diesen Hilegen Hallen". It takes more breath of course to sing bass rather than tenor, just as it takes more breath to play a tuba rather than a coronet. I, when young, had had a lot of breath. I startled the doctor but I was still only marginal for many operatic arias. I think vital capacity - your natural inborn air capacity is an under appreciated talent in great singers. Maybe if I had had even more breath I would have sung better. Carreras - a guy half my size - seems to have had real big lungs.
