Jerry Goldsmith didn't actually compose this theme. Lalo Schifrin did. A lot of comments are saying that the reason why the fanfare stopped being used is cause Goldsmith died in 2004. Yes, he did, but it isn't linked to the fanfare whatsoever. The theme was originally composed by Schifrin, because most Paramount films had the logo silent without any fanfare. And so the fanfare was introduced in the late 70's, but starting in the 80's the fanfare starting being used primarily for home video releases. And hearing this fanfare on a theatrical film release is uncommon if not rare. And starting in the 2000's as home video started to die out, Paramount slowly shifted away from home video, and retired the fanfare. As for why the fanfare is heard on Mean Girls, I don't really know, could be an error, could be a weird decision, but it definitely isn't linked to Goldsmith's death, as the film came out 3 months before Goldsmith's death. And the final notes of the fanfare were heard on the 2015 relaunch of Paramount Television for just a week, which was also a weird decision, because less than a week later it was replaced by the current fanfare.
