Is donating platelet for others to use will help decrease high count in platelet in my end?
@starofwater
@starofwater Ай бұрын
If you donate frequently it can cause your platelet count to go up as your body compensates for what you lost. Where I work we have to turn some donors away because their count is to high.

Have you ever experienced infiltration? It was so painful and I ended up getting some bruises. I don’t plan to stop, but I had to wear long sleeves for a bit so people wouldn’t think I was abused 😅

I just went last weekend to a Red Cross facility. I donate platelets. I stayed around 2 hours. If I can help someone to fight cancer, I will definitely do it again.

Pregnant women can get an antibody (HLA) that would be potentially harmful to the recipient, so some places might only allow men to donate. I'm a woman who has never been pregnant and I donate. Women who have been pregnant may be able to get tested for the antibody to determine eligibility
@starofwater

Your blood will be tested if you indicate in history if you have been pregnant. You would be contacted and requested to stick with whole blood if you are a transfusion related lung injury (TRALI) risk

I have a question about this, is the needle different vs regular blood donation?

Where I work the Amicus needle (that is the name of the machine) is a smaller gauge than a whole blood needle.

@@SR7JJJJ1 hr drive, donation process 2-3 hours, 1 hr driving back. That’s 4, almost 5 hours. Earliest available time 10 am, after kids drop off. I donate when my kids at school. So won’t be able to go back on time to pick them up at 2.

Where I work, your first platelet donation is programed as if you have an average platelet count since it is not known at the time of your donation. Once we get your sample tubes to the lab we will have an accurate platelet count. from there it will be determined on the best amount that can be taken for future donations.

“Only privileged people can or tend to donate?” A lot of places open during the weekends in bigger cities. Just saying. Maybe expanding education regarding the topic in schools would be beneficial.

I work for a nonprofit that collects platelets from donors. Any and all cost that is charged to the hospital is to cover the price of the machines and the single use kits. Also, we have to be paid to collect the product. Kits are like $300 each. Plus there is the maintenance costs for the machines.

I'm not allowed to donate because I lived in Europe during the 80's. They're afraid I may be infected with mad cows disease. I want to donate. Also when I was hospitalized for an emergency blood transfusion in Pennsylvania, the hospital charged me $1,200 for two pints of blood. There's no Cap on what hospitals can charge for blood, unless they've changed it.

@@nicolecato634THIS! I had to receive a blood transfusion at birth. My life was literally saved by a kind stranger who made the selfless decision to take time out of their day to donate blood. Regarding compensation for donating blood, laws are in place to prohibit that because otherwise, people who are ineligible to donate blood safely could potentially still try to donate and it could put the safety of the blood supply at risk.
