I am one of the people who hate Kaiser, but I would hate all HMOs. However, since Kaiser is a fully vertically integrated health system that is both the insurer and the caretaker with no checks and balances, it is a particularly dangerous place to get honest health care.

Totally understand. There's definitely a question mark if the provider of care is also the payer. This does keep costs lower but it also raises at least the question of how care decisions are made. Again, people have really different takes on Kaiser and it's very polarized (like everything these days!). For some, it's a question of cost as the PPOs have exploded in cost since 2014. If those plans are not in the budget (being through Covered Ca OR medicare supplement), then it comes down to what type of HMO... Kaiser's integrated model or contracted out with private doctors/hospitals. Thanks for the comment! We'll keep diving deeper into these questions so Californians really understand their options.

@@CalHealth-Insurance I worked for Kaiser for 35 years and am fairly knowledgeable about how their system works and, as in Vegas, the house always wins. As a retiree of KP, I was entitled to a Kaiser Advantage plan for free for life but I wanted the option to shop around for the best health care so I turned it down and pay out of pocket for traditional Medicare with a supplement. I am loving the freedom of picking and choosing my PCPs and specialists.

I noticed my rate went up from like 17 a week to like 98 a week... so yeah back to Aetna for me. They did it without saying the rate changed. (for kaiser)

Each open enrollment is becoming a roll of the dice on current plan rates unfortunately. The subsidy is driven by the 2nd lowest priced silver plan in the area so a shift in this can really have ripple effects across the other carriers. Those notifications go out October for existing members. One note...in 2025 the Silver plans are getting even richer and there's no income cap now for the silver 73 so it's important to check all the options. The flipside to this is that the silver plans will probably blow up in cost for 2026 since it's basically a Gold level plan now. Happy to help with any questions of course! Many people have errors in their accounts that cause them to miss out (especially the whole income estimationg piece).

Kaiser doctors cannot prescribe any drug that isn't on their formulary. I've been misdiagnosed 3 times at Kaiser.

That is an issue with Kaiser or HMO's generally. We've seen medications get "switched" en masse for certain classes. HMO's will manage care more since they have a cost constraint and medications these days really take the brunt of this.

I worked Medicare advantage plans, I saw some insane plans for people who had rlly good LIS in place, every single thing in or out of network paid 100%

The medi-medi plans or D-SNPs can really work well to absorb costs when care is needed. The out-of-pocket max may look high but that's not an issue if you have LIS and especially full medi-cal/medicaid. In the quote system, just select "Add Special Need Plans" at the top to show these plans. Especially, true for full medi-cal/Medicare (Full Dual). Just double-check doctors as the networks can be different but it's hard to justify going standard Advantage if you have medi-cal. Leaving money on the table!

A lot of the Medicare Advantage plans offered in my area are PPOs.

Hi there! PPO Advantage plans are a little trickier since the costs and benefits are not as rich as HMO Avantage plans. This usually occurs in more rural areas where HMOs don't work well. They can be okay but deserve a comparison with the Medicare supplements plans usually. The max-out-of-pocket becomes important if we might have bigger bills. Happy to walk through your situation! Reach out and we can quote both options [email protected]
