Hi. Please could someone reading this help me? I would be most grateful to know with certain accuracy from an indisputable, verifiable, reputable source the year of birth of operatic baritone Michael Mayes. Thank you.

I found it absurd that the discussion towards the end revolved around the possible offence taken about the representation of other people, stereotyping them through representations that they as the victims of being colonised had no control over. Yet no mention is made of Saint Saens Opera Henry VIII where he uses Tudor melodies to give an English feel to the work. He took great care to research the melodic material while in England. Look at the extensive power battles between France and England and the power dynamics that can easily be excavated within the English language where French has left its very powerful mark. At a certain time in history England was colonised by France so are we as English people to take offence at Saint Saens using Tudor melodies to give an English feel to this opera? No of course not. It is what it is. In his opera Dejanire he tried to conjure up the feel of Ancient Greece through a modal approach to some of the melodic material and he achieved a purity of sound and sparseness that might have come close to how ancient melodic writing could have sounded. Should the Greeks be offended? Of course not. That would be ridiculous. There was so much that could have been explored about Saint Saens and his travels. The people he spent time with. The sources of his inspiration.

I wish Seattle would do its own Ring again. Bringing in individual operas using other companies’ productions is not the same.

The last time I saw the complete Ring, it was this production. I really miss the Seattle Opera Rings.

When she's in town, she sings in a church choir in Philly.... the choir members withdraw would stop singing just so we could hear her beautiful voice ❤❤❤. She's as lovely a person as she appears to be.

Just saw the live performance on Sunday and everyone was amazing - especially Diego Torre. Dare I say he performed this song better than Pavarotti or Bocelli? So much more emotion was heard and felt in Torre's performance - the type of emotion that sticks with you long after the performance.

Very nice voice but a bit too precious. That’s not a criticism of the singer but rather the industry and how it coaches singers to express - i.e. in a style that is excessively informed by an instrumentalist’s need for precision and less an actors need to express drama. Look a Giuseppi Taddei as an example of fuller integration of musical and textual imperatives. His is not the only way to sing this aria but it certainly doesn’t stumble on the account of excessive preciousness.
