you might have gotten some wrong: L, it does not put the transmission into a lower gear, it rather uses low range which is basically shorter gears, used when you need more torque in low speed situations like offroad crawling or pulling another car from ditch, if you shift into L when overtaking you are likely going to break your transmission / engine if there is no protection from shifting from too much speed, it should not be used when driving normally, a bit like lockable 4wd and diff on offroad cars, if you drive normally with those enabled you will more than likely break them. also S, sport mode does not use higher gears, it might change suspension settings depending on the car and will make the shifts later and overall make the car act more performance oriented. and E, shifting into lower gears isn't usually very economic, you will need more fuel to keep the engine spinning faster, economy mode will prefer higher gears to save on fuel.
