Lithium is about his struggles with bipolar. Lithium is a drug used to treat bipolar but it is awful. The song is called it because it's representing his thoughts and how confusing they are having bipolar. That's why the lyrics are like that. It's on purpose due to the disorganizing thoughts while being manic.

I cant believe it has been 40 years since they wrote this beautiful song. Marian Gold was so cute back then n handsome now at 70 ( im 71 now)This was mid 80's n i was lucky to see them in concert while in Germany ( Alphaville is a German Band) Life is too short.
