I was at this race! So awesome. It was back when you would race uphill, downhill, cross-country, and dual slalom on one bike! I was young and inexperienced. I didn't eat, didn't drink, and crashed and hit my head in the cross country. I think I got top 20 in the open category of uphill and downhill. I also ended up in a Mountain Bike Action issue, for a crash in the downhill. 🤣

All the epo'd and juiced up roadies crossed over into Mountain Biking because big money started to be involved. They ruined the sport. Up to that point it always had a very friendly layed back good natured atmosphere about it. That's why it was the golden age of the sport in the early 90's.

It’s 1993 and a lot of these guys are still riding without suspension forks! I was riding on Rockshox for 2 years at this point. Crazy!

Why can’t this guy say Tinker Juarez’s last name correctly. He always says “Durez” instead of “War-ez”. 😂. One would think someone would have explained it to him after the first time.

I just noticed that Yates, like me, starts with his left foot clipped in. Less than 10% of riders do that.

so refeshing to see such a humble, almost innocent guy wining in such a self-effacing way. Such a contrast to todays sportsmen who are arrogant and guarded in comparison.

Are they riding faster here than racers would have ridden just 4 or 5 short years earlier? Either it's a smoother track than usual or suspension forks had improved noticeably.
