Most people have alcohol dehydrogenase. Horses aren't unique for that. If I had a liver the size of a horse's I'd probably be able to drink a shit ton of beer too.

If you gave a horse more apples and carrots would he need the salt block?
@Proequinegrooms
@Proequinegrooms 4 күн бұрын
Probably not, as the amount of salt they need per day isn't relative to the sugars they eat. However, if you feed too many sugars, you may end up spending more money on vet bills for an overweight horse or one that develops insulin resistance. Food for thought as they say!

i 100 get that, i do ride bitless (but with a noseband cuz u kinda hand to lol) but i am looking for a bridle for my friends horse and she is kinda young and needs a bridle what happened is it is just fitted correctly and loose?
@Proequinegrooms
@Proequinegrooms 13 күн бұрын
If you use a noseband, you can check across the nasal bone that it's loose enough. You don't have to get rid of it all together, just be sure it gives enough room.

Thank you what a great informational video and a good explanation. What about when grasses and pastures are brown in the winter but there’s no snow cover yet? Sain Foin and grass is what we have and after one of my horses put on too much weight quickly this fall, we’ve been very careful. They alternate morning and late night with grazing times as well as hey nets so we know approximately how much they are eating. But how much sugar and how much nutrients are in dormant pastures usually? They finish their night hey nets by midnight usually and then go seven or eight hours without food. I just wonder how safe night turn out would be for them as a better option when it’s only 10° and they’ve already finished their forage. I wonder how to tweak their schedule so they can have more safe turn out time. I would rather not use a grazing muzzle on all night I think
@Proequinegrooms
@Proequinegrooms 13 күн бұрын
Its really hard to pinpoint how much sugar is in dormant pasture. But it's really easy to find out your horse's risk of laminitis and colic. Once you understand how "at risk" your horse is, then you can adjust accordingly. And generally speaking, cold nights and brisk mornings tend to increase sugars, and warmer afternoons lower them, but when it's cold all the time and snow is coming, who really knows. Offering hay with slow feeders is always a good idea, and may be easier for horses to eat in the cold weather anyway.

@ thanks! It’s been such a big year of learning with these guys. There’s so much more to learn, a lifetime! But I feel like we’ve come such a long way, and have happy healthy horses. And they really do love when I go out there to give them hay bags. ☺️ I think I’ll get in touch with the university extension office and get our pasture tested during the different seasons this year, just to see what the differences are. It’s such fascinating science, and there’s so much more to it than I ever realized! I adore learning about it all.

is there risks if the horse accidentally consumes them with their hay?
@Proequinegrooms
@Proequinegrooms 13 күн бұрын
I don't think so, some sketchy companies actually sell them as supplements. I would simply cover them up with a layer of shavings! You also don't need to bury spots with them, only a sprinkle or two is good.

How do you heal a horse with this disease?
@Proequinegrooms

Your vet and farrier need to develop a plan that may include resection of the hoof wall, soaking in medications, packing the hoof, applying topical meds, or a combo of all of those.

Can you explain what you mean by matching the blades to the coat?
@Proequinegrooms
@Proequinegrooms Ай бұрын
Sure! Trimmers have tiny blades that won't go through a winter coat. Body clippers have blades that work for most winter coats, and shears have blades that go through the thickest of coats. Each type of clipper, be it shears, regular clippers, or trimmers, have blade options that let you leave different amounts of hair. For example, the #10 on body clippers leaves 1.8 mm of hair, but the #7F leaves 4mm. So pick the best clippers and blades for how thick the coat is and how much hair you want to leave on your horse.

Can you please please please show how to stretch, massage, and/or exercise sore hind legs I’m not asking for all of that, just the best you think that would help with it. My poor horse is getting old and couldn’t even lift her hind legs for our farrier. I want to do my best to ease her pain without medication if possible
@Proequinegrooms
@Proequinegrooms Ай бұрын
Those are stretches that your vet should give you. The hind legs are so complicated and interact with the spine and pelvis, so you want to be sure you are doing the right ones for your horse. Your vet can also help with meds, which are safe to help pain.

Hi! I would like to clip a design into my horse’s hip. Can I draw it on him with chalk first? Or will the chalk gum up the clippers ? Thanks! I love your channel.
@Proequinegrooms
@Proequinegrooms 2 ай бұрын
You can certainly try! I think the best way is to make a stencil from a cereal box, the cardboard is the perfect thickness. I suspect chalk would gum up the blades. Using a marker gives you an outline without the dust, so that's an option, too.
