This is a proven trick that lots of pier fisherman use. I guess you would have to see it in action to really believe in that method. If you watch the video where I caught the 38lb king mackerel, you’ll watch that fish swim the entirety of the pier both shallow and back to deep where I had to free line that fish numerous times to keep him from shooting the pier. I was out matched with a 5000 series reel and still landed that fish. If I had put pressure on that fish I would’ve lost it. I watched maybe 50 kings get lost under the pier last year and I didn’t lose a single fish to the pier in 2024.

I seen people do it D. I just never needed too I guess I have caught 30 pound Kings off of Navarre and I use 15 mono . I don’t use braid when I use live or dead bait. If it works for you then keep it up! 👍🏽

Usually left-handed people and a beginner do it this way. You can suggest to them to unscrew the handle and switch it to the other side.

@taureanwright31 True that. Same here, I'm looking for my wave. We normally don't interfere with your lines and we already know there is a shark near us while trying to catch a wave that could be super fun or possibly hurt us. And most surfers fish also so we know how to cast

The problem is, there’s a whole beach/coastline with good surf if not better surf that is accessible. Why put yourself in a position where you could potentially get hooked? I understand the freedom to do a you please, but in this case it just makes it a conflict of interest. There’s literally a law that states 300ft from the pier for a vessels and surfers. But the law is broken so much that the ones who should enforce it have given up due to laziness or because they don’t feel its worth pursuing. Not everyone fishes with a line out and bait soaking. 9 out of 10x’s I’m walking up and down the pier sight casting at fish. If surfers show up, they not only get in the way, they spook those schools of fish that I’m targeting… if a fisherman purposely targets a surfer it would be a huge deal, but why isn’t it a big deal if the surfer put himself in harms way? And I’m not saying its ok to target surfers, because that’s a terrible idea.

@VitaminDeeTV we surf beside a pier normally because of the sandbar that builds on both sides. However, if you are paying a fee to fish off the pier, then I believe you should have priority. But if we both wake up and head to the pier, me surf, you fish, then we both are pursuing happiness and should respect each other. I don't mess with your line and you don't cast at me, no problems.
