Hi, I'm thinking of doing the ALIF surgery.. you seem to have gone through a lot of physical therapy and a lot of months of recovery if not years. Can you tell me if all this was worth it? I did a lot of things for my back that didn't help at all.. I even did stem cells with umbilical cord, which is a very expensive procedure and NO results (anyone who's thinking to do it for back pain I really don't suggest it). I hope you're doing fine, and I just want to hear an opinion from someone who went through all of this and say it was worth it or not. Thanks

@@carincik my apologies for not getting back to you sooner, but I was on a remote location for vacation recently. It is now been a little over four years since my surgery, and I do not have any regrets. I did do 11 months of physical therapy after surgery. Although I still have my good days and bad days, most of them are good, so as long as I approach life cautiously. I also have kept my weight under control, partake in about 25 to 30 minutes of back stretches 5 to 6 nights per week, and have a eliminated all activities that involve any impact, such as running on pavement, or any plyometrics. I also never lift anything heavy. Lol. Hope this is helpful. I’d be happy to answer any more questions. Best to you.

@roostaskins @roostaskins Thanks a lot for responding! It is very hard to find a review from someone who actually went through all these issues. There are a lot of commercial type videos, and they are all with positive outcome. I do have a job that implies a lot of twisting and bending, opening boxes, moving things.. sometimes, they are not that heavy, but there are heavy boxes once in a while.. and I sell things in a store, and I'm required to box items that might be heavier.. that's why I'm not sure if the surgery is an option for me.. but I watched all your videos, and I can relate to every single word you said about pain and depression that comes with long-term chronic pain.. and I want to thank you for sharing your story! It's very difficult to open up about your struggles..

Hello friend how you doing now years later. Pain levels?. I believe you said the only pain was lower back pain. After the surgery you. develop leg pain. That's why you taken.gabapentin. I'm asking because I might have to go through l4.l5s1 surgery and I only have lower back pain.. Don't know if he's going to fix the problem.

The amount of conviction in your voice tells the entire story. I am 45, back pain since I was a teen. I have DDD of the L3/4, 4/5, 5/1 discs with 4/5 and 5/1 being the worst. I can go to work daily, dress, walk, do all the things. Though twice now, once in 2021 and once in 2022, I had to be taken from my home by EMT's, in an articulated chair, with a fentanyl IV just to get me to move. The pain in my back turned to something I never knew could exist. My body was paralyzed with pain, my brain wouldn't let me move. To the hospital I went and laid in the ER with dilaudid/valium/toradol injections the first time, then morphine/valium/toradol injections the second time. After 6 hours or so, things would calm down and home I would go with a bottle of pain meds. I knew things were bad when I was given a fentanyl IV and that couldn't cut the pain to get me out of bed and into the chair to get to the ambulance. I've done 4 steroid injections, a SPECT/CT scan, countless MRI's, and a tri-level diagnostic facet joint injection regimen to pinpoint the problem areas. I was essentially approved for a tri-level fusion (ALIF+PLIF) but my pain Dr. talked me out of it as he said at 45 and active, I was a bit young to go down that road and he suggested we exhaust all other options (injections and then ablation) before going the final step. I am still on injections and they seem to work but only for about a month. The fear part and the depression is the very very VERY VERY VERY real aspect. Its worse than the pain.....the fear of having that issue again where I have to go to the hospital scares me so much due to how severe the pain was, to avoid nearly everything that I love doing. I weigh 275 now......how long till I begin having health problems due to my weight?

I was never that bad, except for the depression part. It still rears it's ugly head at times, but it's not as dark of a place as it once was. It's been 2.5yrs since my surgery. I do not have a single regret, but adjusting to post-surgical life it still sometimes challenging. There are things that I just will never do again, and I still struggle to come to terms with that. I completely agree with exhausting all options before you take the fusion plunge, especially multi-level, and simultaneous anterior and posterior approaches. I just can't fathom the intense recovery of something like that. If you haven't already, I'd encourage you to watch the rest of my post ALIF videos here and shoot me any questions that you have. Thanks for reaching out.

I am still very grateful and I consider my surgery an immense success. I am still doing my stretching exercises nearly every single night and I am still on gabapentin 600 mg twice per day, but otherwise, I am on no prescription pain medications and I have re-introduced many things into my life that I once had to give up before the surgery.

@@its_ari5458 it was a life-changing surgery, I now have zero low back pain. For 10 years I would get up in pain like an old man. It would hurt very bad after doing work and stuff. Now I have zero pain I feel like a beast. I can only imagine how better it would have been if I would have got an artificial disc versus fusion at L5 S1. my advice to anybody would be to get the artificial disc because you have more movement. And wait as many years as possible if you can because medical science and technology is getting better and better.

I tried to comment on your last post but for some reason public comments are locked, Any way,hey I had the same surgery you did as well as Bryan from Australia (we stay in touch as well) and you hit it right on the head, I was feeling good up until 4.5-5 months. I went to see my neurosurgeon around 5 months post and his first question was “are you doing too much? That just took the wind out of me, that basically told me that I was not were I thought I would be. I saw my self back at work after that appointment and instead he wants me to continue wearing the back brace and see him again in April. I have been off of work for over 10 months now. And honestly not sure when will I be returning. I deliver gasoline in a tractor trailer, very physical work. But lately I’ve been aching a bit more . Any way thanks for your videos they make me feel better, like I’m not alone!
