Why does a 7 hour examination determine who is to be chartered or not. Why then are you practicing. I think chartership should be based on practice, track records, experience, project involvement. I could have a could practice and have phobia on the exams day. Then what??? Am not qualified??? (My Opinion)

My uncle, an engineer who knew engineers who worked on the Olympic Stadium, told me… years ago… the reason the roof did not fit properly, was because the sides did not take into account the curvature of the earth. It was off by a degree or so. Enough to mean metres in height from one side to the other. Take that… flat earthers!

Idk what type of optimization you use but your layout optimization part in peregrine is very poor at solving structure having multiple loadcase scenario

You open by talking about laborers in craft yet you speak not like one. Why do these people feel the desire to discuss our culture of building? I hate them all
@KurtisHord10 ай бұрын
When I look thru the big Smeaton book it’s timber frame trusses in tension, and load bearing masonry in compression. Those are the structural roots off all his buildings. All well and good but he certainly didn’t originate or improve these methods. He simply cataloged.
@KurtisHord10 ай бұрын
Cataloged, studied the properties for sure but these are properties of cutting wood joinery, setting stones, what can be accomplished with simple machine power…. Again nothing remarkable…. Brunelesci did the same…
@KurtisHord10 ай бұрын
These are deeply practices of compagnon labor and Zimmerman practicing guilds. There is no difference from medieval to early modern, its load bearing masonry in compression, or beams in tension. And he wrote down all the pozzolans so he knew damn well Roman concrete wasn’t Roman or never lost

Fascinating talk. I wondered how and if it takes into consideration types of materials to be used, but when they said it just looks where you need elements that made it so much clearer to me. I haven't had a chance to try their software, but I guess it simply gives you the list of loads for each element and it's up to you to then decide what materials you want to use where. Really cool

@Paul Shepherd Question: With the layout optimisation of trusses (59:01) and implementing a simplified global optimum in respect of the material weight - with the asymmetric geometry of the resulting truss design - if adopted and implemented in a building / structure - does the failure modality associated with material wear at end-of-life or accelerated degradation like corrosion or weakening through heat and fire perform less well in terms of safety margin and buffer of "over" engineering? Are the asymmetric members creating more criticality or 'Achilles Heels' at certain points?

Thank you for the interesting lecture, one item to note regarding the failure of the structure due to neglection of Torsion at 38:00 The torsion which you pointed out was a hogging moment in a secondary beam, that moment appears to be such a small portion of the overall moment in that secondary beam that it could likely have been redistributed to a sagging moment in that same beam through plastic behaviour or even factors of safety, thereby nullifying the torsion theory. Ofcourse, the principle you are trying to convey of accounting of induced torsion in the structure is crucial, but it is perhaps not the best example.
