That or they didn’t set the valves properly and it will be a easy fix just adjust the valve lash 👍

I'll be watching these videos closely! I have a 1989 340 Sundancer w/ 454s and would love to see what you do with it. I am sure you have already dug into the engines, but I had a similar ticking sound (engine running fine for the most part) and it turned out to be two bent/broken push rods! It was still running fine, which was just weird to me. In any case, need to take off the intake manifold and possibly the cylinder head (I've never done this work so it'll be interesting). Thanks for the video and insights.

Hey Ben, I just bought almost the same boat; mine is an '87 Sea Ray 34 Sedan Bridge so I have a house on top but below deck it's pretty much the same. Watching your video was like re-living my first day with the boat 😂. My stbd engine is blown so it will be coming out this winter for a rebuild. Look forward to seeing more content about a Toucha Class and if you need to compare notes or documentation feel free to message. Cheers

Those 'twigs" up on the bow pulpit are screwed into the core. It is always wet there. Also beware, just ahead of the windshield on the starboard side there is often a hole for some reason that wicks water. It travels in the core which is balsa to the nearest pin hole and stains the roof material on the salon ceiling. Also the bilge scuppers are drilled and just quickly painted. If you have any standing water it rots the stringers. The good news is the hull is solid. The bad is those prop tunnels make it hard to turn.

At some point the port engine has ingested water in the engine oil. Maybe for the reason the intake and or exhaust manifolds were not in stalled correctly. This boat has no heat exchanger and so losing water into the engine internals will go unnoticed.
@ChullsterOG17 күн бұрын
Nice work pal. A quick idea, at 36:27 you can raise the engine so you don't have to kneel down, save your back and knees.

One other problem is the transom door sticks out past the swim platform so if you have the door open and your back into your slip, you’ll damage your door against the dock

Those engines came with flat tappet hydraulic camshafts, not solid roller lifters !!
@MrAirsoft091722 күн бұрын
Hello, you mentioned something about zinc in the oil for older engines. I have a 89 5.8L cobra and a 2001 5.7L Volvo penta gsi do these need zinc and what oil brand would be the best. I use mercury four stroke 25w-40 conventional. This is what my local marina told me to use. I’m located in the north east
@bensboats21 күн бұрын
Hi yes, flat tappet valve train systems require zinc and other additives not usually found in modern oils. Valvoline VR1 racing oil has the correct additive package for these older engines. Being a 5.8, that's likely a Ford engine. I am unfamiliar with the valve train setup on the Fords unfortunately. Your 2001 should have hydraulic lifters and roller cam. This setup does not require zinc, but always check the engine serial number to be sure. That 25w40 is good oil. Thanks for watching!
@MrAirsoft09172 күн бұрын
@ what oil viscosity do you use with the valvoline. I only see they have a 20w-50. Would that be ok for the 89 5.8l because I am using the 25w-40 like mentioned in previous comment? Also does it matter if it’s not marine oil?
