Over ten years ago I stayed in a 24 hr storage unit. I had bins that I set up and placed them on either side and in front of a recliner. I read in the recliner and would fall asleep for a few hours during the day and at night I would walk across the street to a 24 hr work out gym. There I used the treadmills, watched TV with ear pods on my phone while I worked out. I used their computers for my side hustle of making digital art and selling it online. I walked to a nearby 24hr restaurant and ate there. I had two restrooms to choose from: the 24hr gym & all night dinner. I never was in the storage facility at night ever. I just slept in the recliner and read books with my forehead flashlight. Did this for nearly a year.

@Tribulation_Harvest True. But sometimes I would have the door open and had a photo album in my lap as a prop. Or a baseball card collection and transferring baseball cards from a plastic container into the plastic sleeves and had a built in story of falling asleep. Mostly during the day and out by dusk. Staying away for days or weeks at a time helped by couch surfing or taking long bus rides on Megabus lol. Never would I eat or take birdbaths in bathrooms. But I was lucky to have other 24hr places to go to and couch surf. But people in these videos cooking food are jerks because that's dangerous. They're obscene & narcissistic imo. Great video btw!

@@scifibri2376 It's true that other people's actions can be dangerous, but as far as coming across a unit where someone has fallen asleep while in the middle of relaxing in a recliner, I personally would have given them a warning, because sleeping in a unit, as far as we were concerned, was the same as living in the unit. It was frowned upon. You got away with it, though, so that was an accomplishment.

This guy is acting like a hero for catching people trying to survive... Gross! You have no clue how rough it is out there when you don't even have a place to sleep or keep your belongings! No one living out of a storage unit actually believes the people working there won't catch on. They're just hoping that when they do, they'll have a heart. No one's getting fired because they didn't "notice" someone sleeping in their unit right away. Now if they're being a complete slob and causing issues or if the manager says something then ok. But let's be real here, that's not what was going on. You were clearly getting some kind of sick enjoyment out of catching people like you're a detective or something. Stop. That's not a heroic act .

Hey Adam. Well, you certainly had a lot to say on a subject you know little about. I have no idea how tough it is bring homeless and living on the street? You obviously haven't read any of the comments (and my replies) below, because if you had, you'd know that I was homeless for a while, so I know a thing or two about how rough it is out there. I don't know how you gained the knowledge from every single person living in a storage unit to say that none of them expect to get away with living stealth in a storage unit. From my experience, it's their hope that they NEVER get caught. Also, your suggestion that no one would get fired for not "noticing" anyone living in their unit is not completely true. I'm a Christian, so I don't lie, which means if my manager asked me if I knew that someone was living in their unit, I'd have to tell the truth and admit that I knew. But that situation would never arise, at least not with me, because I wouldn't allow that situation to exist once I found out someone was living in their unit. You seem to think I have no heart, but what you don't seem to comprehend is that I have hundreds of other customers to be concerned about. People who live in their units are a potential danger to others and themselves by potentially becoming a risk for fire, crime, overdosing, human smuggling, biohazards, etc... I've explained this over and over again, so I'm not going to go into any great detail about it here. Please read the other comments. Your account is new to KZbin, and you have absolutely no content on your channel. I got news for you where I rent it it's a big building that you go in and undo a lock on a door but then you also have an exterior garage door that opens up that's locked from the inside so I hate to say this but you could totally get away with it and that unit because for one you wouldn't have to run no extension cords power already in the unit and two you could lock the one door inside the building and it would look like the units locked and when they do a drive-by on the exterior of the garage door would be all the way down so they wouldn't be able to tell if anybody was living in there because anybody was living in their could lock it from the inside when they're in there

I have news for you too, my friend. If the staff or management cared enough, they'd do a walkthrough of the inside of the building as well. The fact that they're not taking the time to do that shows me that they're not putting much effort in ensuring that no one's living there. They're just being lazy about it, so you're not really "getting away" with anything, they're just not putting in the effort to ensure that no one's living there. If I was working at that facility, I'd be doing several walkthroughs a day. Also, there are more red flags other than spotting an extension cord. I don't think you'd last long there under my watchful eye...lol. 🕵 Oh, and the fact that they don't even do a walkthrough of the inside of facility at least once a day for a safety check is a bit concerning.

Well, technically the squatters are abusing a loophole in the law, and the fact that you use the word "steal" shows that you think it's wrong, just as I do. People living in a storage unit are breaching their contract with the company, violating company policy, violating local and state law, etc... which is also wrong. Yes, they pay for the use of their storage unit, but fair use is defined within the contract that they signed. Their signature is their word that they'll abide by those terms.

I got evicted from a storage unit for putting boxes in empty unit beside me. Yes, I was told not to, but manager also complained about boxes in hallway, but I had to put boxes somewhere to get to back of my unit, so a conflict of orders. Worst part was they encouraged a Karen on my floor to spy & snitch on me, so she walked over to stare into my unit (I wouldn't dare snoop in anyone's unit) & promptly snitched on me putting boxes in empty unit & I was told immediately my lease wouldn't be renewed. The letter was vague saying "we've gotten complaints, some of which we witnessed ourselves". You can't defend yourself against such vague letters because you don't know exactly what they're talking about. I was also accused of not leaving on time, but all I could think of was once my bike was locked inside after closing & Karen opened the exit door, let me inside to get my bike & snitched on me even though she was obviously late too. Of course, she was the source of complaints & Karens don't don't stop complaining unless you, well I won't say it.

We didn't have any after hours staff, but we did have a security company monitoring the building electronically, plus the swipe card system kept a log of who swiped in and out.

I’ve never lived in a storage unit personally but I do know people in bigger cities who can’t afford the rent so a lot of times they will rent an office independently and run their business out of the office and live there too. If you run a business and you’re strictly online, then you don’t have to worry about customers so you can have an office that you can run your business from online but if you have a business where you have customers coming out of your business, then yes, it’s gonna be difficult to live there and work from there at the same time because if you don’t own your own office, you’re gonna have to worry about the person you’re renting the office from coming in and seeing that. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen offices for rent and at the bottom they will tell you this is not a place to live so if you try to live there they’re definitely going to see it. Not to mention in bigger cities I’ve actually seen offices connected to one building, so your office is inside of a building building right next-door to another office so it’s going to be impossible to live there.nowadays it’s tough times for everybody financially so it’s not easy for everybody to afford a big apartment. Specially, me and the constant fear of finding work and keeping the job and not getting paid well is hard. Me personally, I don’t have a car and I’m struggling between jobs so if I ever end up homeless, then more than likely, I’m gonna probably end up going to a shelter because living in a storage unit I would be too paranoid.

I made a deal with the manager who lived there to get access to the unit at night for my band to practice without disturbing the other renters during the day and the businesses around it. I gave him an extra $100 a month and some weed lol, and he used to come watch us practice along with many other people (like mini concerts) at night on weekends. We would just open the big rolling door and play to around 20 people. We just tapped in the lightbulb fixture in the unit to gain power to our amplifiers and PA system. It was great and we did it for a few years until the band broke up. We were always very respectable, and no one ever messed with the other units there. This was the farthest from stealth you could get.

the most obvious red flag is basic human noise. also, smelling food brought in or cooking smells. cigarette smoke, a coffee maker, dope. i believe, though, that people saying they live stealth in a storage facility are NOT unnoticed. I used a locker for almost three years as a warehouse. i lived in a jerry-rigged truck cap and the locker was the warehouse. there was a sale on tooth paste/brushes/deodorant? stock up and take to locker - that's why i had it. an old wardrobe with clothing switched in/out seasonally. some foods. lotsa spare windshield washer fluid. winter tires, all season radials changed as needed. furniture like dressers, wardrobes can still be used as such. my old small dinette served as a desk, filing cabinet still worked - i did my income tax return one night in there. i slept/ate in the pickup, "lived" out of the locker. thank gawd i had it - was affordable for those three years and sure helped keep me organised and sane till i could find an affordable apt. the night (5 hrs) i did my tax return a custodian did find me with the door partially open. i locked up, went for supper and was back in again with coffee to finish up. Living there was never an option. 6 yrs later and i am weighing whether i should do it again...

The bit where he started talking about homeless people trying keep warm really pissed me off. Giving the person the benefit of the doubt and letting them stay a night as to not freeze to DEATHH...... is what any decent human being would do. Give them a few hours and a warm drink at least.
@Tribulation_Harvest
@Tribulation_Harvest 8 ай бұрын
In my community, emergency shelter is offered to all the homeless on those bitter nights where someone could "freeze to death." As far as being a decent human being, that's all subjective. The type of behavior you consider decent may not seem decent to others, hence your disagreement with me on this matter. I'm sorry you got upset, but perhaps you should direct those feelings towards the community at large that feels no great need to solve this issue themselves. What progress have you made and what effort and personal sacrifice have you made in your own community to end homelessness? If the state ever got wind of a storage facility that was purposely allowing people to sleep in their storage unit, the business would be shut down. So now we're talking about hundreds of customers who would have to vacate their storage units, some of whom live out of state, live in other countries, or are serving in the military. Having someone living in a storage unit is against policy, is a liability issue (could lose insurance which would cause the business to close), a biological hazard, a personal safety hazard, a fire hazard, invites crime, is in violation of local and state health laws, etc... So, knowing all that, you can see why a storage facility must refrain from allowing customers to live in their units. Also, the facility is closed at night, there are no security guards, and only critical areas are monitored by cameras in most cases.

@@Tribulation_Harvest Personally I work for an animal rescue shelter. As for homeless people, in my country we are urged to report anyone sleeping rough when the weather is freezing. @Tribulation_Harvest
@Tribulation_Harvest 8 ай бұрын
@@GothicKittyMadness I don't kick them out. I report the situation to management and make a note in their account file. After that, it's management's responsibility to decide how they're going to handle the situation. If we allowed someone to sleep there and they slipped and cracked their head open, no one would be there to help them and they could be seriously injured or die. Then what? Or, they could be cooking in their storage unit and accidentally start a fire, which could cause their death, the deaths of others, and destroy the sometimes irreplaceable belongings of others. I could go on and on. I worked in self storage for 5 years. I've seen and experienced a lot.... Fire hazards, biological hazards, drug use, prostitution, etc... This is why no one is allowed to sleep in their storage unit. Besides, I've moved on and no longer work in the self storage business.

Well, you wouldn't be renting it from me, you'd be renting it from the company, and I've long since left that job. 🙂

Knew a person who almost got kicked out if his storage unit. In 2018 he had a decent job of 60k a year just a year out of college. His parents were dicks so he moved out and lived in a pickup truck with a topper and curtains. He kept truck very clean so no one could tell he lived in it. For bathing his work had a gym where he went everyday to exercise then shower. He had a good number of possessions he kept in a storage locker he visited very frequently to change the clothes he kept in his duffel bag. Because he came and went a few times a day occasionally in the evening hours some self righteous employee thought he was living their despite the cameras showing he came and went and usually was there no more than 15 minutes at a time. He complained to the manager and the manager viewed the logs and saw no evidence of him living there. The employee who accused him became irate and ended up getting fired. He never knew what happend to the irate employee, but after three years at his company he got promoted once and and saved up enough to buy a good sized starter home out right. He never could have saved the money he did if he never stored his possessions in his storage unit. Normally i see storage as a waste of money but he cleverly kept an older well maintained truck that had barely any registration cost and barely drove it as well as using appluances as work for food he bought at aldi. Very smart and determined individual. The only thing that set him back a little waa laundry mat cost. I him use my machine occasionally to save him a little.

Back in the days, before I got my NAS, I used to burn my movies onto DVD. I used a special "DVD Burner/Label Laser" external device. And with that I had to buy "laserable" DVD's . Ever use them?

I mean he posted this to express his opinion. It’s obvious many people have stayed in storage units some get caught some don’t . This video wasn’t helpful to anyone 😂 but just posted because he wanted to discuss his opinion .
