Soldering irons are dirt cheap so someone who wants to try swapping the joysticks for the first time might get one of them instead of a hot air station, that’s why I didn’t even try it. Who knows? I might do a video trying that at one point.

I dont get it, why destroying the joystick will make it easier to remove ?
@pimodzzz
@pimodzzz Ай бұрын
So, you don’t need to break them apart but if you choose to leave them intact you would have to remove all the solder off the pins while making sure you don’t add too much low temp melting solder because what can happen is the solder can flow to the other side of the pad, where the joysticks are sitting, and it will be very hard to extract. So I thought it would be more beginner friendly to break them off since they’re not usable anyway.

I love open-source, but it obviously fails in UX. Swiping actions being based on speed seems terrible, and all the wasted background space in the easily accessible space for right thumb, and the home button being in the most difficult corner to reach with thumb, seems like a failed attempt at Ubuntu branding by just copying the 'iconic' desktop layout :/

@PodcastUbuntuPortugal
@PodcastUbuntuPortugal 4 ай бұрын
You mean GPS navigation? If so, than yes, there are several GPS navigation apps, I personally like uNav. However I'm not sure your tablet is supported (some versions of it are), and Ubuntu Touch doesn't have natively AGPS on most devices (just on Volla devices), which means that navigation is purely made by GPS, which is slower than most people are used to get an initial GPS position. I've visited many countries in Europe and navigated using an Ubuntu Touch device, and even crossed some very wide extensions (multiple thousands of km) using it.

Hey Steve, since my comment I have joined the Ubuntu Ports forum and have followed their device recommendations and it's been working pretty great since. Following some debugging guides I found out that the Asian models for the Pixels sometimes have different binary blobs and firmware which was causing the issue, there have been unofficial patches for this and ever since, it's pretty stable, and I only had to force restart once during the past three months, which is excellent. Waydroid is also way more stable now. It's been a good experience since.

Android is the best Linux, it does everything right what Linux does wrong, all what's missing is software (apps) which can replace desktop software, once that's the case you can plug your phone to a monitor and keyboard and mouse and use it as a better desktop os than Linux or Windows.

What does Android do that Linux doesn't? 😅
@jondo7680
@jondo7680 5 ай бұрын
@@stephensumpter5311 your question already starts wrong. First you should ask what Android doesn't which Linux does. For one it doesn't force you to open the terminal to do your work. It doesn't force you to compile your software you simply get your apk and run it. And if you uninstall it you can be sure that it's gone, no bullshit left on the device only exception is a single folder, the downloads folder, and other folders only if you gave the permission. Which is what Android does great which Linux doesn't. Permission management. It's easier than beating the first level of Mario Bros, which even 3 year old children manage to do. It also has awesome sandboxing, programm x wants to steal data from y? Well only if I give them both the permission to access the same folder. Well my file manager has access to all files that's not good. Well luckily I can deny Internet access with 4-5 touches. And I can even teach my dad how to do it. He will forget it in a month but at least not in 10 minutes.
@stephensumpter5311
@stephensumpter5311 5 ай бұрын
@@jondo7680 Your response already starts wrong. Linux doesn't do a single one of those things. Android is a distro of Linux, other distros of Linux don't have Google behind them to pin all of the support on. Also my question was phrased to match your statement, not some lack of understanding.

it depends on how you define much. Some things went away, some improvements Canonical didn't finish were finished and integrated, new ways of supporting more hardware were developed, way more hardware is supported, more apps exist, a new app store run by the community exists, it's based on 20.04 (huge change from being based on an OS that used a different init system), etc...

looks like it has potential, but it's clearly not polished. perhaps figuring out how to run .apks directly into linux at native performance would be the game changer. And making sure the battery performance is better or equal to Android. Android is also open source so there is no reason to switch to linux at the moment. They need a game changing feature
@PodcastUbuntuPortugal

Running APKs is not a goal, the goal is to do different. However, you can install Waydroid and run android apps there. Ubuntu Touch main feature is convergence, and not spying on users, and allow people who participate on the project to contribute to the definition of its future.
