The mine just kind of went under the radar completely. for anyone researching this now, they are actively cleaning it FINALLY and there is actually security there. for the longest time, it was completely unsecured and people could just walk right into the buildings there and pick core samples right off the shelves where they were left. You could even take a dip in the water pooled at the bottom of the pit (if you wanted a few extra chest x-rays worth of dosage). Everything kind of happened just before social media and independent media. Hell, to even get to the mine you had to know that the USGS website had photographs of the area that showed where the mine actually is (it wasn't on maps). The mine didn't show up on any map service like MapQuest back then. If you look now on google maps though, you can see them finally doing something about it. Pretty depressing how long it took for any clean up. If i remember, it was something like 15 years after funding was secured before a single thing happened at the site.
