I now live alone , and I don't cook out as much as I did when my wife was alive . But , I have been looking at buying a Lodge Sportsman Grill for a while , and your video is pushing me further in that direction . Thanks for the insight into this cast iron piece , and how it works . Now, I have to build a table to support the grill and what I am cooking . 😋🤗

If you put the draft door and fire door in the bottom of the grill for transporting it won't be off balance.
@guadalupe_rodriguezNPK2 жыл бұрын
The caution was for the transport when coals are inside. Which I wouldn't recommend doing. Nonetheless, as is, the grill remains off-balance. A non-issue for me. Thanks for stopping by and commenting

So just out of curiosity. I just got a 16ft diameter canvas tent. I also got a 16x20ft poly tarp to lay underneath it. Can I put grommets in the center of the tarp, not by the edges, so I can put the tent stakes through the grommets so I can have that extra tarp space as like a door mat type thing outside the door of the tent? That's the only thing this tarp will be used for so there won't be any tight pulling on the tarp. I guess I'm just wondering if it'll compromise the weave at all?
@guadalupe_rodriguezNPK3 жыл бұрын
You can put them anywhere without worrying about strength. A problem will be some rain coming in the through your centerly placed granmmet.
@akstylez69783 жыл бұрын
@@guadalupe_rodriguezNPK thank you for the reply. Since the tarp is only going on the ground under my tent anyway I don't think I'm to worried about the rain. They could actually help with rain drainage.

@@guadalupe_rodriguezNPK , it seems like some folks on Amazon say “ gold” grommets and they are just thin steel with a gold colored coating that I am afraid will rust in a hurry on outdoor tarps. I’m trying to make sure I get a good punch and anvil and brass material (or aluminum but it doesn’t seem like those are easily available) for the grommet itself so it won’t rust. Thoughts?
@guadalupe_rodriguezNPK3 жыл бұрын
@@chammockutube since the corrosion is mostly atmospheric, one solution is applying a protective coating. The coating will only slow down the inevitable of (rust) metals going back to its natural state (back in the soil). Consider this: make sure to mat similar metals with each other. For example, avoid using corbon steel rivets on copper plating or use lead bolts on gold framing. When bonding dissimilar metals leads to oxidation, then to corrosion. Lucky for us, most tarps aren't made of metal. So, avoiding breaking the protective when installing a grommet (nearly impossible, unless covered with tape or similar item during installation), provide a protective coating afterwards (paint) , and post-care (cleaning & lubrication) similar to cast iron cookware maintenance.
@chammockutube3 жыл бұрын
@@guadalupe_rodriguezNPK Thanks. I found what is stated to be a solid brass grommet on Amazon and one of the reviewers said they cut it in half and it was indeed brass all the way through and not brass coated steel so I think I’m gonna go with that. Thanks for your lightning fast replies. Have a great evening Sir!!

A good clear description of the grommet installation process. But, it will likely tear out with even moderate force. Some reinforcement of the area will make it much better than even the original ones it came with. Placing a piece of high-quality duct tape on the tarp before installing the grommet will work wonders.
@guadalupe_rodriguezNPK4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comments. This video is an installation tutorial. The need to reinforce an area being installed is vital to keep from tearing up. Either with several plies, over and under the grommets or a single layer of thicker materials.

No offense but the reply to that answer was a copout. People see these videos and do as they see. Agreed you should have shown better reinforcement.

I do this for a living in a sailmakers, if you want to make it real strong cut oversize patches of a similar material and glue them (contact adhesive or sailmakers self adhesive repair tape) each side first then cut hole, really hit the damned thing to cut that hole, one big hit, don't pussyfoot about! Then insert grommet and washer and likewise HIT IT! When you do hundreds of them you can get it down to two good hits, I'd be there all day tap tap tapping like that! As for filing the sharp edge smooth.... life's too short man! Do you think anyone really does that?
@guadalupe_rodriguezNPK4 жыл бұрын
Your right, as I mentioned in the video, you will need to reinforce the grommet with a other materials to make it stronger. To compare shear strength from sailmaking to a camping tarp is a stark difference. As a military aircraft structure repairer, the level of QC demanded for military aircraft vs civilian aircraft is almost night and day in their respective repair manuals. This differences in procedure comes from the demand of use. For example, one demands a minimum edge distance while the other is more flexible, respectively.
