Can an American Samoan, a U.S. National, be subject to deportation while in the U.S.? This morning, 11/04/24, I had a telephonic interpretation with one of the Oregon Courts. To make the long story short, at the end of the hearing, the judge said to the defendant, who happened to be a U.S. National: a violation of this court order, could result in 360 days in jail, $5 ,000.00 fine, and, if you are not a U.S. Citizen, you will be deported. This question whether a U.S. National can be deported came up serveral times during my interpretion services in the last 40 yrs. Shortly, in my interpreting service today, I reluctantly informed the judge, knowing that it was not part of my service, unless the judge interrogated me. Nonetheless, I have stated to the judge that the the U.S. National, could not be deported since Am. Samoa in a U.S. territory or part of the U.S. From experience over the years as a Samoan Interpreter & translator, the lawyers and judges are not quite familiar with the status of my Am. Samoan clients. They are so ambivalent about the status of Am. Samoans in the U.S. Fonoiā Frank A. Peters
