I'm reading her memoir now too. So great to be able to see this performance after reading about it. She was only 19. Phyllis Diller told Barbra that the first time she heard her sing, hearing the first notes her hair stood on end, and that she had 'dollar signs all over her.' What a voice. Her biography is fascinating. It's apparent that it wasn't edited, and I love it. It's really personal and doesn't feel contrived at all.

I wish she would've kept this Voice. I loved her singing in the 60s-70s most of all.

I so agree with you. 60s and 70s vocals were her best for me. Brilliant arrangements by many, mostly the great Peter Matz.

I compare her voice to the actress in the recent Funny Girl produced on Broadway. They’re simply no comparison. I hate how singers today all sound the same, which I think can be attributed to voice training. They don’t have the volume, character, or heart that singers used to have. Yes, Barbra Streisand is unique with her vocal power, but there were so many good singers during the 50s and 60s.

. What's craziest of all this is that having been born in April of 1942, and given that this was originally broadcast on *May 22 of 1961* , means Barbra Streisand would only be 19 years of age here !! 😲 .

What a voice! When she hits the high note at the end of "Sleepin' Bee", it is so beautiful. How can a 20 year old, who never took a singing lesson in her life and with little experience, sing that perfectly? It was all there, right from the start : the voice, the emotions, the acting, the expressive face and hands, and how she tells a story in every song. What maturity for such a young girl. What I like about her voice is that it's not operatic. There is no break in her voice and she never sing in pure head voice, here notes are always connected to her chest voice. She's the only one who has such an even register.

It’s astonishing! I read that her goal was to become an actress, and that becoming a singer was the best path to that goal. She and her boyfriend figured out the look and how she would act and dress. She won a talent show and then went to the Bon Soir for a short period of time, then a gig in Detroit and then appeared on Jack Paar. She was already a consummate professional in her singing style, and her personality was so adorable. She seems so natural in front of the camera. That was it; she was a hit! I can’t believe that one of the first things she says is about “people” and then Jack says something about her being a “funny girl.” (If I heard it correctly.)

How great. I love A Sleepin' Bee from the live Bon Soir recording album. It's so charming and offbeat, her voice angelic. Enjoyed watching this thanks. That's Gore Vidal to her right on the interview couch, cool to see him too. And Phyllis Diller!
