Dear prof. Marquez, thaks for your videos are very useful for me. I'm a MS in Italy and I'm writing my thesis to complete my course of studies. The topic is on the evacuation of an area hit by a tropical storm. To simulate the evacuation I'm using Arena. Coud you give me some advice on using Network link and intersection with transportation?

@dralbertomarquez

Giorgio, I've never done a model like that. However, conveyors come in 2 types. Accumulating and non accumulating. I believe (not sure) that accumulating allow the conveyor to keep working regardless of the stop in the last cell of the conveyor. Conversely, non-accumulating stops the complete conveyor if the last cell is stopped for any reason. I think if you seize a resource without exiting the conveyor, it may stop the conveyor, but not sure. You will have to try. Please let me know if you succeeded.

Hello Mr Alberto , could please help with building this arena. 1. Background Electromotors Solutions (ES), Inc. is an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) located in Scranton, PA that produces various models of electric motors used in industrial applications around the world. Due to high volatility and uncertainty of demand, the company has decided to adopt a mass customization production model. In this production strategy, the base configuration of each model class (primarily the motor housing) is produced in Scranton, but final assembly to exact customer specs is performed within their distribution warehouse located close to each major customer. The distribution/final assembly warehousing operation in Ardmore, TN that services the TN and North AL markets is the subject of this case. Electromotor Solutions - Ardmore Facility Figure 1, on the following page, shows the layout of the Electromotor Solutions - Ardmore facility. The motor housings for three different base models - Models A, B, and C - are shipped to, stored, and customized to a particular customer’s specs at this facility. Each base model has its own receiving AND shipping dock, as well as its own storage rack. However, all three models use one common assembly and packaging area before being shipped out to the customer. Assembly and packaging time varies based on the base model. Suppliers offload their load of a particular base housing model at its own receiving dock. Newly delivered base housings would wait at their receiving dock for a forktruck to take them to their designated storage bay/rack in the warehouse. Once an order arrives for a particular configuration of a base model, a fork truck is sent to the end of that model’s storage rack to carry one base housing to the assembly area. After that motor housing has been assembled into the final product, it is packaged for transport and carried via fork truck to that base model’s shipping dock. For example, Base Model A shipments would arrive at the Bay A Receiving Dock, would be carried one at a time via fork truck to the Model A Storage Bay, then removed (based on a customer order) from that storage bay and carried, one at a time, to the common assembly area once an order arrives for that motor. After assembly and packaging, that completed motor would wait for a forktruck to carry it to the Model A Shipping Dock, where it would leave the warehouse. --- Figure 1: Layout of Electromotors - Ardmore Facility Receiving Dock A Receiving Dock B Receiving Dock C Storage Bay A Storage Bay B Storage Bay C Assembly Area Packaging Shipping Dock A Shipping Dock B Shipping Dock C Model A Truckloads of 20 Model A base housings arrive at the Ardmore facility approximately every 4 hours, but transportation time varies - interarrival time is TRIA(200, 240, 480) minutes, with the first arrival at the very beginning of the workweek. Once the truck pulls up to the Model A receiving dock, the base housings wait for the single receiving dock forktruck to carry them to the beginning of the Model A storage rack, where the housing rolls down a gravity conveyor to the end of the rack and waits. Base housings are carried one at a time by the receiving dock forktruck due to their weight. These base housing are held in this storage rack until an order is received. An order for 20 of the Model A motors arrives exactly every 260 minutes, with the first order arrival 25 minutes after the start of the workweek. At that time, an automated order picker removes a base housing that is held on the Model A storage rack and informs the assembly/shipping forktruck to pick it up and carry it to Assembly. Once at Assembly, one of four assembly technicians assembles the remaining components of the motor according to the Assembly Time for the Model A motors, which is NORM(12, 3) minutes. The motor next goes to the adjoining Packaging Area, where a robot packages it for shipment to the final customer. Packaging time for the Model A motors is TRIA(2.5, 3, 3.5) minutes. After packaging, the motor waits for the assembly/shipping forktruck to carry it to the Model A Shipping Dock, where it is shipped out of the warehouse. Model B Truckloads of 20 Model B base housings arrive at the Ardmore facility approximately every 4 hours, but transportation time varies - interarrival time is TRIA(200, 240, 480) minutes, with the first arrival one day (480 minutes) after the beginning of the workweek. Once the truck pulls up to the Model B receiving dock, the base housings wait for the single receiving dock forktruck to carry them to the beginning of the Model B storage rack, where the housing rolls down a gravity conveyor to the end of the rack and waits. Base housings are carried one at a time by the receiving dock forktruck due to their weight. These base housing are held in this storage rack until an order is received. An order for 20 of the Model B motors arrives exactly every 260 minutes, with the first order arrival 505 minutes after the start of the workweek. At that time, an automated order picker removes a base housing that is held on the Model B storage rack and informs the assembly/shipping forktruck to pick it up and carry it to Assembly. Once at Assembly, one of four assembly technicians assembles the remaining components of the motor according to the Assembly Time for the Model B motors, which is TRIA(10, 12, 15) minutes. The motor next goes to the adjoining Packaging Area, where a robot packages it for shipment to the final customer. Packaging time for the Model B motors is UNIF(3, 3.5) minutes. After packaging, the motor waits for the assembly/shipping forktruck to carry it to the Model B Shipping Dock, where it is shipped out of the warehouse. Model C Truckloads of 20 Model C base housings arrive at the Ardmore facility approximately every 4 hours, but transportation time varies - interarrival time is TRIA(200, 240, 480) minutes, with the first arrival two days (960 minutes) after the start of the workweek. Once the truck pulls up to the Model C receiving dock, the base housings wait for the single receiving dock forktruck to carry them to the beginning of the Model A storage rack, where the housing rolls down a gravity conveyor to the end of the rack and waits. Base housings are carried one at a time by the receiving dock forktruck due to their weight. These base housing are held in this storage rack until an order is received. An order for 20 of the Model C motors arrives exactly every 260 minutes, with the first order arrival 985 minutes after the start of the workweek. At that time, an automated order picker removes a base housing that is held on the Model C storage rack and informs the assembly/shipping forktruck to pick it up and carry it to Assembly. Once at Assembly, one of four assembly technicians assembles the remaining components of the motor according to the Assembly Time for the Model C motors, which is UNIF(10, 14) minutes. The motor next goes to the adjoining Packaging Area, where a robot packages it for shipment to the final customer. Packaging time for the Model C motors is exactly 4 minutes. After packaging, the motor waits for the assembly/shipping forktruck to carry it to the Model C Shipping Dock, where it is shipped out of the warehouse. Material Handling Material handling within the Ardmore facility is carried out by two forktrucks - one for the incoming receiving-to-storage rack transport, and another for transport from storage rack-to-assembly and packaging, as well as from packaging-to-designated shipping dock. Therefore, the receiving forktruck handles all material handling before the storage rack, and the assembly/shipping forktruck handles all material handling after the storage rack. Each forktruck travels 2 miles per hour, or 176 feet per minute.

How would you approach this if you had no original formula, and only time series data? What sort of numerical approximation techniques could you apply? I recall seeing a 5 term numerical approximation in my Quantitative Biomechanics class I studied years ago, that used 2 preceding and 2 anteceding values, though I do not recall what it is anymore and I have unfortunately lost those notes.

Based on data the best approximation of the derivative would be the piecewise linear line that connects the points defined by the pair XiYi. The derivative would be (y2-y1)/(x2-x1). Improved precision could probably be computed using more points but I am not familiar with such methods.

Hi, I have a question related to Arena and decisions, I want to decide where I send a entity based on the waiting time of two processes, so I use expression if Process1.Queue < Process2.Queue, but what I get is 1 and 2, not the waiting time, could you help me to get the expression, I´m new to this.
@dralbertomarquez
@dralbertomarquez 2 жыл бұрын
Hello, Where are you messaging from? Is this question related to a school project? Waiting time is an entity-based computation. What I mean by that is that each entity has a waiting time and you need to compute the average of waiting times by considering several entities. Now, what do you actually mean by waiting time - how are you defining it? Do you mean how long have the last entity in that queue waited or has been waiting? Do you mean the average waiting of the last 10 entities? Do you mean the average waiting of all the entities that have gone through that queue? You may have a variable to compute any one of the above - the one you want to use is your functional concept of "waiting time" - compute that for a couple of queues and compare them to make a decision. A simpler way is to make the decision based on the number of entities in the queue. That is computed in the instant of the decision and does not require average computed over several entities. In Arena, you can define locations named STATIONS. Inside the station, you can conceptually have a process. (Something weird about stations is that strictly speaking stations are not really locations but attributes of the entity, so while two entities can be in the same process using the same resources, conceptually they can be in different stations if the attribute station is different for each entity) You can easily select the station using the block PICKSTATION. PICKSTATION allows to select the next station based on the number in queue, the number in route to the station (in transit, not yet in the next station queue but that will be added to the queue), the number of servers busy, or other expressions (I am not familiar on how to use such expressions) I hope you find this answer helpful.

@@dralbertomarquez Thanks so much, I have to do a project in Arena because of School and I couldn´t find the answer, I have used the number of entities that have gone out of a process minus the ones that have gone in to know how many are waiting and based on that I decide where to send the entities, but I don´t know why the waiting times have increased instead of decreasing when I used a decide by chance
