Hi Ben, Nice to meet you, I'm Rifqi from Indonesia. I'm currently planning to buy a Nakamichi Cassette Deck, specifically the DR-2 model. As I'm still new to audio, I'd like to ask if I can get clear sound from this cassette deck without using an additional amplifier. Currently, I'm using Edifier Active R17 speakers at home, which already have a built-in amplifier. Or would it be better to use an additional amplifier?
@Nakamichi_Service_UKАй бұрын
@@rifqizulfikar4660 hello Rifqi, You can use the dr-2 with headphones only, but the sound is not quite as good as through a system. So yes, I would recommend an integrated amplifier to feed your speakers

Have just finished one of these myself. Recap, mech clean up and re lube. Still not 100% happy with W&F at 0.06%, but still much better than the 0.15% when I bought it. Calibrated beautifully on That's MR-X pro metal, That's EM-X chrome and BASF normal. Yours is a very clean example, lovely!

@@Stuartrusty yes capstan belts are a nightmare. Today’s deck was a 682zx and the Russell industries prb 9.6 gave just 0.04 W&F which is excellent. Others in the same pack have been 0.09!

I've had all 3 of them, 202, 303 and 505. Personally, I liked the 303 the best because it had a Sendust Alloy head, as the LX3 does, but Nak perfected the tape flip, which I think was a good idea, rather than deal with a head that turns, perfect alignment every time flipping the tape itself, SMART!

Would be great if you could take the audio feed directly from the tape deck outputs. I'm not sure we're currently hearing the true performance of your work through the microphone microphone. Just an idea 🤷♂️

Agreed. My bench speakers are also a limiting factor but as it’s only recorded on a phone, I haven’t tried to improve anything. Perhaps a further extended demo on the main system?

Это конечно круто выглядит, но неужели было невозможно в то время реализовать реверс проигрыванием ленты в обратном направлении? Плееры девяностых годов уже так умели.
@Nakamichi_Service_UK3 ай бұрын
Here is the translation: It certainly looks cool, but was it really impossible at that time to implement reverse by playing the tape in the opposite direction? Players of the nineties already knew how to do this.
@Nakamichi_Service_UK3 ай бұрын
Yes, of course Nakamichi also knew how to implement bi directional auto reverse which it did in the dragon and several vehicle decks

Hi. Great video. I have a question: I have the opportunity to buy an M-9039 gauge..how do I test if it is working without a cassette deck? Do I just put in fresh batteries and push the arms up to see if the LEDs light? Any advice or tips would be appreciated. Thank you!
@Nakamichi_Service_UK5 ай бұрын
You see I have a yellow jumper cable attached to a pin on the front of the gauge. All you need to do is touch the other end of the jumper cable to each of the two electrodes that would rest on the tape head. This will illuminate the beacons if everything is working

Obviously these look amazing. But how do you rate them from a mechanical and sonic performance perspective?
@Nakamichi_Service_UK5 ай бұрын
Playback of tapes recorded on my Nakamichi 1000zxl sounds fantastic. The deck calibrates all tape types but the calibration is a bit off and I wasn’t able to successfully resolve that as it didn’t behave as expected in set up mode. Therefore playing back its own recordings isn’t quite hitting the mark. I’m sure an experienced B&O Beocord Technician could resolve all that. A full electrolytic recap would also be advised as the deck is now 40 years old. Mechanically, several of the idler wheels had cracks radiating from the hub and the clutch arm was cracked. Not sure if this is an age thing or poor prior servicing or handling. But a very good mechanism considering there is just one motor and one capstan. Not my cup of tea but I respect what they did with the deck and you can’t argue with how it plays. Level meters are awful though, lacking resolution and finesse.

Good to know that you service decks other than Nakamichi. What about other components? I have an 1980s JVC graphic equalizer that probably requires recapping. Signal intermittently cuts out in one channel. Returns when I power off and on. .
@Nakamichi_Service_UK6 ай бұрын
Yes, I do a few other components but have so many decks queued up that I’m not keen on anything other than Nakamichi Decks. This is due to potential lack of spares, service manuals etc. But if customers are keen then they can get in contact and be added to the list of course.
