Brother Suresh nicely explained the difference between the physical consequences and eternal consequences of sin. I do not think that sinful behavior will always have physical consequences. They are dependent on a person recognizing that their behavior was sinful, which in turn depends a person knowing the meaning of sin. It is entirely posible for a random person to value money over everything else, gain a lot of wealth, live comfortably (because they have what they wanted) and die happily (having acheived what they thought was the highest GOOD). It is reasonable to say that we all (believers &unbelievers) lack the intellectual knowledge to identify sinful behavior. Even then, people should have a desire to cause less sin once they have the knowledge to identify it.
