I am 6 months past my double mastectomy, which was outpatient, no reconstruction. I choose to not wear prosthetics or breast forms. This whole time it’s been cooler months and I was wearing lots of layers. I am just now entering Springtime, and am trying to figure out how to dress with my changed flat body shape. I have always been lean, and I am not ‘flat’ but am actually ’concave’. So some tops don’t hang straight but suck in. I am trying to balance my thought process which vacillates between ‘this is the way I am, I’m proud of my decision’ or ‘how do I make this look normal’. I am searching online for examples of how others are coping. Thanks for sharing your experiences.

How the surgery and recovery?

Why the hell do doctors always worry about what the patient's partner will think? That makes me so flipping mad. Like when I was talking to my ob/gyn about getting my tubes tied during the inevitable c-section at the end of another high-risk pregnancy. I was done. The ob/gyn looked at my husband and asked if he was ok with it!!! It's not his body or health at risk! Got my tubes tied and have no regrets. Unbelievable. WTF with these doctors!! Thank you for the video :)

Hi! I had a double mastectomy 50 days ago. I was offered reconstruction but opted for being flat. Mine was only DCIS. No post surgery treatments needed. I feel happy and sure of my decision.

I met with my cancer surgeon yesterday and told her I wanted to go flat. Beautifully flat. She was so supportive of my decision. I was overjoyed.

Bras are so uncomfortable so freedom from that is just a plus. Boobs are uncomfortable too. My mind works exactly like yours regarding all this.

Very good! I love flat as well. Best decision I’ve made. I’had mine in July 2010

Thank you! I, too, decided to have both breasts removed (even though only one had cancer) and I have remained flat chested for 11 years. At first it was a delight to jump and run ... I felt like a girl again without the pulling and bouncing of breasts. I have not regretted my decision either.

The medical field really needs to catch up with the 21st century. I find it positively patronizing and unethical to pressure women into unnecessary cosmetic surgery at a time when the primary focus should be their health and well-being. It also sends the message that to be flat is unacceptable and/or unattractive. It seems very rooted in a macho mind set. I congratulate you on holding your ground and making the choice that felt right for you!
