My first guitar (as a beginner) was a brand new 2011 Epiphone Les Paul. I only replaced things that weren’t working properly from day one, or stopped working subsequently. In order they were the bridge, nut, output socket, pickups and wiring circuit. The last one (pu’s) came after ten years when I realised I was only playing my acoustic because the LP sounded horrible. In fact, I had ditched the LP in a corner and bought a Vox Bobcat V90 (wonderful). New pickups have got me playing the LP again. Bridge replacement (with a Gotoh Nashville bridge) was due to intonation problems. Nut replacement (with a bone nut) was due to horrible sounds / non-sound from G and B and e strings. The issue was mainly due to how the nut had been fitted. A properly fitted plastic nut would probably have been ok. The original work was done so badly I will never buy another Epiphone. The tuners are fine.

The vintera sounded really thin and weedy compared to the American original which sounded full and rich especially the in between settings.

Between these two which one has overall larger body? Or both are identical in terms of overall body size? Thanks

Considering getting a second hand Epiphone 60 standard and putting some Seymore Duncan “Slash” Zebra pickups on. But gather the pots might also need to be swapped out to make the most of them?

I wish i had found this sooner, but... 4 years late, i wonder if you're still monitoring this. I would *love* to know how to get that very specific type of guitar tone: Strat, 5th position, i can see that. But, what 'amp' are you using, how is it set? Do you roll off the tone on the guitar or amp? I'm particularly interested in how to get that 'dead' or dampened sound, that sounds a little 'woody,' without highs. I know Nile frequently went straight to the mixing desk, and sometimes used Fender amps, but either way, my Strats with a Kemper don't sound quite right.

It isn’t “better than a Gipson” and never will be! You simply can not change the quality of the wood or the finish that’s used and while you can remove and replace all of the cheap parts in the end it’s still and always will be a worthless cheap guitar! Same can not be said for the Gipson that even broken will always be worth more than the Epiphone.

Worthless? You sound a little elitist. It’s a guitar that looks and sounds great. Some people have $150 guitars, let alone a $700 guitar. It’s like saying a Civic is worthless because it’s not a Ferrari. It’s worth is in it’s ability to drive. Just like the epiphones worth is in its ability to make sounds. And this one sounds great. Sounds like you spent too much on a Gibson and are coping imo

Don't know if y'all are still at it, but came to this video trying to understand series and parallel pickup arrangements. Couldn't tell when y'all were in series and when in parallel. Just a heads up about the effectiveness of your information presentation, and your average dull viewer.

I still haven't found pickups, cheap or expensive, that really upgrade the quality of sound unless, of course, you're going to shred at eardrum breaking levels for life. I use amp EQs, gains, boosts and various pedals to affect the sound and give the audience what they want to hear. I totally agree with everything else.

Not very realistic demo. Would be better to demo this through an actual spkr cab- since thats what most people would play in a live situation

I have the 60s Modified and it's great and I love it! I don't care about the fancy switching in the least. If it broke I'd just fix it to standard wiring with the back pot on the bridge because I always roll back the tone. I'm old and been thru many guitars and these are very good.

I can't believe they banned using parallel fifths in classical music. If we played that first exc. In that era they'd probably put us in jail.😂

I pulled the trigger today on a used 60s Vintera Mod in OW, like the one in the vid. What a fantastic guitar, and it was this review which made me decided to check it out. Glad I did, it truly plays like butter and the price was a steal even though the guitar is as good as new. I may be 4 years late to the party, but hey, better late than never. Cheers.

Vintera Mod has Player neck dimensions, bar an extra fret.....9.5 radius, medium-jumbo frets. It doesn't have the "plays like butter" Soft V, 7.25 radius, narrow vintage frets of the Vintera.

Why "Locking tuners"? There is no tremolo. Why are they needed? I just threw them away and went back to vintage Kluson's. "Locking Tuners" are a gimmick to sell you another NON needed item & take your money. Carry a pair of dykes in your kit, & you'll be able to snip the ends just fine.

Gotoh self-locking tuners (tulips shape) . TonePros T3BT System II bridge & Alu tailpiece. Earvana compensated nut. Stainless steel frets. 3way switch upgrade - steel lever shaft (perfect acting). Rock solid Pure Tone two ground contact output jack. RC compensation between top&wiper volume pots. But - original pick-ups, original pots sprayed with special lubricant (zero scratches). Of course many manoeuvers with truss rod. Result - perfect intonation, action, sustain straight from the body. Of course pretty good strings - 10-46 NYXL.

With all due respect you lost me at the first exercise. I guess I'm slow. You say it's an easy exercise and I've slowed it down and I'd have to listen to it 50 times before I got it. It would be better if you named the front numbers.

I prefer the ceramics. The Player is catering to the more in your face (I must be heard) new age of hipster kids. I prefer the subtle Standard more. It's super subtle and somber compared to the 'i took too many antidepressants' sound of the new one.

I'm not always a fan intervalic playing but this really worked for me. You found and stayed in the pocket which made all the difference. Playing fast is cool for a bit but it gets boring. This - you can jam for days!

The pickups on the old Mexican standards are almost over the top bassy and loud, not in a good way either. I counter it by lowering the pickups on the lower strings side, and playing at about 80% of the full volume. Then it starts to sound like a regular American strat, more mellow and defined.

Lovely looking guitar and great playing. Initially I was asking myself why anyone would do all of that work on an Epiphone, but I have to say it sounds and looks great. I have a 1996 Gibson Les Paul Standard and have done some of those mods, specifically going for a vintage wiring harness and caps which made a massive difference, but then also swapping out the 490R/498T's for Lollar Imperials which bring clarity and tone.

People are saying it’s not a huge difference! 😂🤷🏼‍♂️ It’s a very obvious difference. The Vintera sounds more precise with less String noise. The player has that thud of the strings that’s not being resonated by the guitar and pickups. The Vintera is way more dynamic and consistent.

I got a Grote 335 copy off Amazon for $129 delivered. The body and neck were solid so I spent $350 on pickups and pots, tail, saddle, nut and locking tuners and it is totally astonishing. It sounds and feels as good as my original Gibson 335, plus I can drive it like I stole it and not worry getting it banged up, and it feels like my own. In the end the tone is all about the pickups and pots. Feel is all about how comfortable the neck is. If the neck and body are solid then yes, mod it up a bit. Make it your own. The Gibson was 3.5k. I wanted to love it but you wind up being scared of scratching it, you worry about digging in. My advice, get an old beater ans see if you can squeeze some juice out of it.
